Travel by train/ bus from BKK to Kanchananaburi -Chiang Mai

We are planning on staying in Bangkok for a few days and then traveling up to Kanchanaburi for 2 days then onto Chiang Mai. We would like to know the best mode of transport train or bus for BKK and how long do they take to get to Kanchanaburi? Is there a train or bus that leaves from Kanchanaburi direct to Chiang Mai?

Travel by train/ bus from BKK to Kanchananaburi -Chiang Mai

Bump please - I am interested as well.

Travel by train/ bus from BKK to Kanchananaburi -Chiang Mai

A/C buses depart BKK for Kanchanaburi many times a day, usually take around 2-2.5 hrs

Train leaves from Thonburi railway station to Kanchanaburi available only 3rd class train, 2 times a day. Cheap but takes longer time, about 3 hrs

No bus/train goes direct to Chinagmai from K%26#39;buri. You have to bus back to BKK. If you want to go to Chiangmai by a bus. Choose a bus that runs directly from K%26#39;buri to the Northern bus terminal, Mo Chit.

If you want to avoid getting back to BKK, you have to take a local bus to Suphanburi and connect a nother local bus to Ayutthaya. Then you can bus or train up to Chiangmai but it%26#39;s too hassle and troublesome to do so

Hello yalowa,

Thanks for the great reply. I hope the OP doesn%26#39;t mind but I do want to piggy-back a question. You mentioned that there are AC buses that go to Kanchanaburi and that it%26#39;s faster than the train, but where does one go to catch those VIP buses? And can you recommend a reputable company? Also any recommendations for accommodations there too?

Thanks very much!

Thanks for great info Yalowa.

And cool that others can tag along and use the information also.(Cricket28!)

I would also like to know where to go for VIP bus services from BKK to Kanchanaburi?

Also the train trip from BKK up to Chiang Mai could you tell me how long it takes and what the conditions, rough costs etc as we are limited for time it might be just as easy to bus back to BKK from Kanchanaburi and fly up to Chiang Mai as we are also traveling across to Hanoi after 4-5 days in Chiang Mai

The buses from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi (and the South) depart from the Sai Tai Mai station located in the Thonburi side of the river.

You are not going to see Kanchanaburi on that site but they depart from that station every 20 minutes from very early in the morning.

Remenber:Southern Bus Station or mostly known by Sai Tai Mai

Chokdi

I forgot, the Northen bus terminal is called Morchit an is located very close to the Chatuchak Wekend Market

Thanks for the reply Arumsawas!

If you take train,that%26#39;s gonna take 5 hours to get there and I don%26#39;t think your trip will finish in one day but,for bus you have to go Southern bus terminal. For my idea I think you suppose to go with the tour and can book any travel agency take one day trip and after the tour let them transfer you back to train station in Bangkok %26#39;cause Kanchanaburi and Chiangmai are diffence direction then take train to Chiangmai.I very often suggestion to my customer.

A/C bus leaves from both the Northern terminal(Mo Chit) and the new Southern bus terminal (Sai Tai Mai).Departing from Sai Tai Mai is the best options as there’re many companies and don’t have to wait so long for a coach . No need to pre book , just walk straight to any ticket booth. I have no preferred company but the 999 VIP bus is probably one of the best

For an accommodation, it all depends on what’s your like/dislike. If you want a bit of nightlife, consider staying around the River Kwai bridge which is not far from its city centre. Check out these sites

If you like somewhere nice and peaceful, consider staying outside the town and also Sai Yok district(another 60 kms from town) is quieter and far from a night scene .

You can book a day trip once you got there. Many travel agencies and the price is slightly lower than booking from Bangkok

For a train trip to Chiangmai, I recommend reading this thread

Hi Yalowa

would you please clarify for me? We are catching the bus back from Kanchanaburi to BKK and then catching the overnight train to Chiang Mai. Should we be catching the bus to the southern station or the northern station, bearing in mind that we need to go on to the train station?

Hard Rock Cafe Hotel

I will be staying in Hard Rock Cafe Hotel in November. Has any one been to this hotel? is it a nice hotel? I heard they have a very good foam party on Saturdays.

Hard Rock Cafe Hotel

Its fun if you like a noisy party type atmosphere. If you want peace and quiet its not the place to be. The breakfast room is too small for the number of guests using it, and the rooms are overpriced and undersized for a hotel of this standard, otherwise its fine.

Hard Rock Cafe Hotel

thanks for the info. I am going to pattaya to party not to sleep so therefore I think it will be fine.

    Hi

I sent them an email thinking of staying for the 3 day/ 2 night package, just for a bit of luxury. Did you book direct with the hotel and was it ok?

Has Anyone Booked at Ao Nang Phu Petra Yet?

It does look really nice, but i suppose it would really. I emailed the hotel and they have plenty rooms. I was thinking of the 3day/2night package but i might just go on spec.

    Cheers

It is our obligation and faithful promise to be soft opening our resort on December 1st, 2009. To make you feel comfortable, the process of construction is now 90% and will actually get everything done and completed by November 2009, meant that we do reserve the time to test the system and every single unit in the resort for things to be thoroughly and perfectly run at the first date of soft opening.

phupetra: Just so you know. I have reservations at your new resort and very much look forward to our stay. Also, I submitted a review based on the very warm and efficient level of service I received from your offices regarding the excellent manner of response and information I received to my inquires and the overall booking process. It was such a pleasant experience that I wanted it as a review but TA declined to post it :( See you soon!

SHIHONG ! What is your period of stay at our resort?

Our reservation is during the second week of January. Arrive on the 7th. Can%26#39;t wait!

    Hi ,

This does look nice. I might consider booking as well.

How far is it from the beach and is it easy to get to the beach from the resort?

    Thanks

I already booked this resort. They said taht although the resort is far from Aonang beach aournd 1.5 kilometres, they provide free daily shuttle service to Aonang beach every hour. You won%26#39;t disappoint for their service.

    February or March

looking at Hua Hin for February or March, is there much of a difference in the weather in these months?

    David

    February or March

The difference is that its starts to get quite hot in March. February would be my choice, but both months should be more or less dry.

    February or March

Both would be dry, about 30-32 degrees daytime, nice as evenings drops to about 23-25 degrees, so you can expect very pleasnt warm tropical evenings without %26#39;excessive%26#39; humid heat, hence why weather is a big plus in the area.

You might find March a little less busy and perhaps air fares might be a little better.

    Hi

I went in mid-February this year and thought the weather was perfect - not too hot or too cold during the day or night and no rain. The hotel I stayed in wasn%26#39;t too busy - enough people for a good atmosphere but not enough for it to be crowded or noisy. I would say it%26#39;s the perfect time to go!

Does anyone have experience with the Elephant Training Center? I found lots of references to other elephant centers on this site but not this one.

    bangkok to kanchanaburi

Hey, flying out tomorrow....so excited!!! Planning a trip from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi- tiger temple, floating market, bridge over river kwai. Is it possible to do this ourselves or are we better getting a guide???

    bangkok to kanchanaburi

You can do it yourself although a joining a tour (minibus) is quite economical. You can book from any street corner travel office. Hotel pick-up around 7am and dropped off back at hotel around 7pm so quite a long day.

You will have to pay admission at the tiger temple and extra for a boat trip at the floating markets. We have some pics of our trip here... www.bobandjanette.com which may help. We later returned by ourselves for an overnight trip to Kanchanaburi and the Australian War Museum at Hellfire Pass (highly recommended)

    Happy %26amp; safe travels

    bangkok to kanchanaburi

We went a couple of days ago. It was great. See my post called ';getting around in an near Bangkok';.

The Tiger temple is reportedly a rip off that many say is best avoided. Don%26#39;t know though %26#39;cos we didn%26#39;t go. Just south of Kanchanaburi there is a fabulous temple called Wat Tham Seua. It is only a little distance off the road to Bangkok and is the most beautiful one, with the best views, that I have seen.

    Cheers

Hi - If you have the time stay at Kanchanaburi - it is a lovely place and you can then spend some decent time at the places you want. We caught the bus from the Southern Bus Terminal to Kanchanaburi and stayed for three nights at a guesthouse and then organised ourselves from there. We went to Tiger Temple which we enjoyed even though very controversial. We hired bikes and rode around (very hot though) to the War Museum and Cemetary and river. Also went to Erawan National Park which was fantastic. Look into it more on the Kanchanaburi forum. Well worth visiting for more than a day.
