Seen a lot about shots all over...

I am going to Phuket for a total of 5 nights and 4 days.

We are staying at the Marriott Phuket Beach Club, we will be doing a Simba Sea Phang Nga Bay tour as well as a Siam Safari all day tour with 1hr inflatable canoe down the khao sok river and an hr elephant trek through the rainforest.

For such a short time there, do I really need to get ALL of the shots?? Or just need to make sure my hep a, b, and tetanus are up to date? Thanks to anyone who can help!!

So you are in Thailand for a total of 8 days? In addition to your Hep A, B, and tetanus, I would probably recommend Typhoid vaccination. When are you there for? Typhoid is more prevalent in the rainy season.

getting travel shots is a personal choice and in the end it%26#39;s up to you no matter what advice you get. I will state however that my Japanese wife Megumi and I have been living and working here in Phuket for the last 13 years, have traveled all over Thailand and never had any shots.

Maybe we have just been lucky as I know that Capt. Mark, another local resident from OZ got Denge Fever.

Again it%26#39;s a personal choice and although you are staying at very upmarket accomidation you will also be going into the jungle and some persons are more prone to get things then others due to pre existing factors that should be considered.

LOL, when I read shots I was seeing a bar lined up with Tequila shots.

You really need to see your doctor, as only you and your doctor can decide if you wish to risk your health should you contract a preventable disease.

What price health??

Staying at a high class establishment does not preclude you from getting sick. All you need a member of staff who has Hep A or Tyhoid germ, and hey presto, so do you.

You do need to consider having up to date (at least 8 weeks before you travel) the following:

Tetanus

Typhoid – it is an infectious disease in the digestive system and not be confused with Typhus which is caused by louse-borne bacteria.

Hepatitis A

Polio

Most illness is caused by poor hygiene, ie hand washing after using the toilet!!

You may need Malaria (the worlds biggest killer) protection or at least advice on preventing bites.

But, check with your doctor!

I said 8 days in Thailand, not 8 days in Phuket. You stated in another post you were also spending 3 days in Bangkok. So I was asking if you are spending a total of 8 days in Thailand.

Not to mention you are also spending a day in Siem Reap and 1 in KL? So 10 days in SE asia? So really, it%26#39;s not such a short amount of time, not that it%26#39;s a long time, but it%26#39;s not only a few days. It%26#39;s just a short amount of time at each destination in SE asia. You would be good to state the whole picture in your threads, that you are also visiting the other destinations. It gives others replying a more comprehensive look at what you should /should not be doing. Just my opinion though.

Accommodation in November

Hi all

Hope you can help! We will be arriving on Phi Phi sometime between 19-24 November (going to Krabi first, then Phi Phi, then on to Ko Lanta). At the moment our plans are quite fluid, so that we can basically decide when we%26#39;re there how long we want to spend in each place.

However, I know that this is the beginning of the tourist season, so I am concerned - I don%26#39;t want to arrive and find that everywhere is full, or end up in somewhere really awful because it%26#39;s all that%26#39;s left. We%26#39;re looking for bungalow/beach hut style accommodation - not expensive hotels - but not bottom level basic.

Will it be ok to turn up at that time without having booked accommodation, or should we book in advance?

i hope someone replies to this question as i have the same problem but arrive 6th november for 10 days, im really worried we are going to be left sleeping on the beach! Lol

The first thing I would do is decide which part of the Island you want to stay on and check the availability now of various hotels that appeal to you.

There is a lot of accom on Phi Phi ranging from basic to 5 star so you both need to decide on what you want and where you want to be.

I would plan ahead - but thats just me, I like to know where I am going to rest my head on arrival - at least for the first night!

Also keep in mind that Phi Phi is not one of the Islands where you will find that ideal cheap beach hut that you dream about - things on this island have changed and it is at times pricey - but worth it!

Where to stay at Laem Thong Beach

I%26#39;m heading to Phuket in January and we%26#39;d like to stay on Phi Phi for 2 or 3 nights.

I%26#39;m leaning towards Laem Thong Beach because it%26#39;s less crowded. Having trouble deciding where to stay though.

I am tossing up between Phi Phi Natural Resort and Erawan Palms Resort. They are similar prices and have had similar reviews.

Any suggestions?

Where to stay at Laem Thong Beach

I have only ever stayed at the Holiday Inn but had a look at both of these and if I had to choose I would opt for the Erawan Palms - its smack bang in the middle of the beach and other two resorts - its flatter, gardens looked nicer as well - but really you are not going to care to much! The scenery is gorgeous you won%26#39;t be in the room that much!

Also you can eat at the restaurants at the sea gypsy village which are far better priced but also venture in the Holiday Inn beach fron restaurant and go up to the Sunset Satay Bar.

Whatever you decide you are in for a treat with this destination - well in my opinion anyway!

Will be arriving at Krabi airport in afternoon on 23 November and departing for Bangkok on 30 Nov/1 December.

I am very keen to stay for a couple of days in Krabi somewhere, then move on to Koh Phi Phi Don and then possibly to Ko Lanta. Is this too much?

Would like to stay in relatively luxurious accommodations but the problem seems to be that, in all three places, the better accommodation appears to further away from the area where there would be a good choice of beach restaurants/bars etc. I don%26#39;t wish to be in the thick of bars and clubs etc i.e. right in Ao Nang in Krabi or Ton Sai in Phi Phi but to stay somewhere like the Sheraton in Krabi or the Zeavola in Phi Phi seems to limit you to eating and drinking in resort.

Anyone able to advise on suitable places?

Ao Nang has several eating establishments.

For only a couple days, have you considered staying at West railay? The scenery is GORGEOUS with limestone cliffs surrounding the area, fine white sand soft beaches and beautiful water. Most of the restaurants are on the resorts, but not the way you might think. They all sit right in front of the beach and are open air. There is a menu usually in front of each of them so you can look them over before you decide if you want to eat there. You can just walk along the beach and choose a restaurant. There is one restaurant/bar not associated to a resort on west railay. Not sure how many on the east side, which is only a 5 min walk from the west. But there are more restaurants/bars on the east end. You can eat /drink at any of them.

We stayed at Railay Village and loved it! 2 gorgeously landscaped swimming pools. Large spacious immaculately clean rooms with large bathrooms with seperate shower and tub.

Railay Bay also gets good reviews, and has rooms ranging from your basic room up to villas.

Railay is about a 10-15 min longtail boat away from Ao Nang and it%26#39;s cheap and easy to get back and forth.. except after dark, it gets more expensive and more difficult.

Anyway, highly recommend West Railay for your Krabi portion.

Whilst I would highly recommend the Amari Vogue Resort located on the amazing Tub Kaek beach, there are no other restaurants apart from that offered at The Tubkaak Resort within walking distance.

There are a handfull of local restaurants and an Irish pub located within walking distance of the Sheraton, Nakamanda and just within reach of the Sofitel.

In any case, most of the resorts offer a free shuttle service into Ao Nanag, although you will need to catch a taxi back...

Krabi or Koh Samui

Going to Thailand in January. We are planning to do Phuket, Bangkok and either Krabi or Koh Samui? Any suggestions? Hotel recommendations are also appreciated!

In January, Krabi will have the better weather. We love Krabi, stayed at West Railay in January 2009 and going back in December. Very beautiful.. limestone cliffs surround the area. On Railay, it%26#39;s very peaceful.. no roads, only walkways. Beautiful white sand soft beach. And a leisurely 10 min walk from another amazing beach of Phra Nang. It%26#39;s a 10-15 min boat ride to Ao Nang which is popular with toursists.

We stayed at Railay Village on West Railay and loved it! Large spacious immaculately clean rooms. The bathrooms were huge with seperate bath and shower. 2 gorgeous swimming pools, and a lovely open air restaurant that sits directly in front of the beach, as does all the restaurants in west railay.

Krabi or Koh Samui

After visiting both places in June this year, we believed Koh Samui was over priced and over done.

Generally, Krabi province is relatively untouched in comparison to Samui, and haqs am more authentic Thai feel and is far more relaxed. We also loved Krabi more for its scenery, with amazing limestone formations, beaches and national parks to visit.

If we had our time again, we would skip Samui althogther and stay longer in Krabi around Ao Nang area.

Why 2 different beach resorts? Why not visit the north (Chiang Mai etc) and see something different? Anyway, IMHO Phuket and Samui are crowded tourist traps in the high season and Krabi would be better than either of them.

Totally agree with DragonC.

We travelled throughout Thailand in June/July this year, including Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Krabi and Phuket, and our two most favourite places were - Chiang Mai and Krabi.

Krabi si far superior to Samui and Phuket and is still relatively unspoilt and fra more authentic, plus it is more beautiful and has some amazing beaches to explore. It is a great place to base yourself to check out the Islands too.
