So, the Katathani Phuket Beach Resort sounds like a good fit for our stay. A few questions for those who can answer.
1. I have read numerous people say there is a hill up and then down towards Kata beach. But the photos show the resort is right one the beach. What is this hill others are talking about?
2. How much would the hotel taxi cost to go to Patong?
3. Does the hotel offer a shuttle (free or paid)? If so, can anyone comment on their schedules?
4. Was this hotel affected by the 2004 Tsunami?

Katathani is on Kata Noi beach, the hill is between Kata Noi beach and Kata Beach - two different beaches. It is a big hill, but we walked it in both directions with no problems. Most of the shops and restaurants are in Kata Beach. Katathani is in two sections, one section right on the beach, the other across the road and not on the beach.
The taxi to Patong ? Depends on how well you can negotiate and how many drivers are around. Certainly no more than 400 baht.
Don%26#39;t know if they offer a shuttle. Many places we have stayed at did.
Being on the beach, I imagine it was affected by the Tsunami, but couldn%26#39;t say for sure. When we walked past it and along the beach there, we could see no signs of any damage, everything looked lovely.

The Katathai hotel was affected by the Tsunami like nearly all beachfront hotels. But that was 5 years ago now. We stayed in Phuket 2 years back and didn%26#39;t see any evidence of the Tsunami. Katathani has been renovated if you check out their website you will see they have many different styles of rooms. The hotel has won a Tourism Award in 06 - 07.
If you email the hotel directly they can tell you how much a hotel taxi would cost. You might even be able to get a driver to take you Patong and bring you back to the hotel for a good price.
We stayed here in 2007 and there was no sign of the tsumani. There is a hill to walk over to Kata but as mentioned if your fit no problem to walk, we paid a 100bht to go over to Kata. When we were there it was a free shuttle to Phuket town a couple of times a day and there was a shuttle into Patong at night for a small charge. Not sure if they still do this. As said there are 2 wings 1 right on beach other a small service rd to cross which we found no problem as there are a few loungers on thet side of the beach. Have a great holiday Beryl
We stayed there a few months ago. A very nice hotel right on the beach with magnificent manicured grounds. Would not hesitate to stay there again.
Get the Junior Suite if you can afford the extra $$
Two big pools and the buffet breakfast is nice. A few shops and restaurants outside on the street if you don%26#39;t want to eat in or travel / walk to Kata or beyond. It is about a 10 minute walk to Kata Beach, yes the hill is steep but OK for anybody with average fitness. The View Point Hill is a different story, although I walked up it twice. The Hotel has a guided fitness walk up the big hill ( not the hill to Kata ) Speaking of View Point, you must NOT miss going up there at sunset for dinner at one of the two restaurants. take a taxi or tuk tuk. The tsunami did not reach the ground floor rooms I was told.
It is expensive to get a taxi to Patong. Probably 400-500b each way. I would not use taxis, they are far too expensive for Asia. You are at their mercy especially at the Kata Thani because it%26#39;s a bit out of the way from the busy areas. The hotel has a shuttle each evening for Patong leaving at 7.30 for I think 150b return. The only disadvantage is that it leaves Patong at 11 to come back. Not a lot of time in Patong for some but enough for us.
You could get the shuttle in and get a taxi back in your own time. Apart from the girlie bars / crowds / noise there is not anything in Patong that you couldn%26#39;t get in Kata / Karon in my opinion. Others will have a different opinion I%26#39;m sure, but that%26#39;s what makes the world go around.
