looking to meet at full moon party jan 30th

Ive heard some nasty things about the fmp, yet i still want to go. I noticed that you need to book at least 3 day on island during party. Im a 31 year old male from Chicago. Id like to meet up with someone and get a really nice and secure hotel to enjoy party. Alex. Albrixie@gmail.com

looking to meet at full moon party jan 30th

Hi Alex!

I live here more, than one year, and trying to not missing any good party - Black, Half, Full Moons and others (Moonset, Guy%26#39;s bar...). Can tell you the truth - all, what I saw here for this time and what possible to call ';dangerous'; - lots of completely drunken people in FMP night. Yes, I heard some strange stories, but never saw it by my eyes.

I recommend to you to book something on a distance from Haad Rin - you can find good resort with good price and short minimum staying - SrittanuHaad Yao, Chao Phao - good beaches, easy to reach everything, good roads, if you%26#39;ll hire motorbike.

Does this place have a pool?

I%26#39;m looking to stay on this beach in Dec./Jan./09 and am having a hard time finding anything nice for less than $200 USD/night. I would love to stay at Rocky%26#39;s but can%26#39;t afford it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh and we need a pool.

Thanks,

D

Does this place have a pool?

Have you tried www.booking.com? They still have availabilty over Xmas within your budget for hotels on Lamai beach with pool.

We%26#39;ve used them a few times and found them good. You can email the hotel to make sure they have your booking and pay at the hotel rather than up front.

Hope this helps!

baggage storage at airport

I am traveling from BKK to Singapore; is there a place at the airport that I can leave a suitcase for a week. I am going to SIN then back to BKK to JFK and I don’t want to have to carry all of my bags with not much time between flights so if I could leave it the airport that would be great, suggestions please?

baggage storage at airport

Chubb have a baggage deposit center next to the Tourist Assistance Center on the second(?) floor, or you could consider this:

baggage storage at airport

thank you and sorry to everyone for having posted the same thing so many times... i will chubb, is that the name of a place or something?

Chubb is a British-based security company, which operates the Bangkok airport Left Luggage facility.

There are two Left Luggage counters:

';Level 2 - Arrivals

The Left Luggage Counter is located on the Level 2 (Arrivals) - near the escalator - behind EXIT 4 area.';

';Level 4 - Departures

The Left Luggage Counter is located on the Level 4 (Departures) - near the entrance of Entrance 4.';

They charge 100 baht per piece per day. They reportedly do not accept valuable items or computers or personal electronics.

Bangkok Self Storage charges 100 baht per piece per WEEK, but you%26#39;d have to taxi into the city to get to it.

they absoulutely don%26#39;t accept valueable items, your baggage is x-rayed before storage and if anything looks like a phone. pc, camera etc. they will ask to look through the bag and you will need to remove said object before storage. I%26#39;ve used them and they were reliable

cheers

Tong is already booked - please help

My young family and I are travelling to Bangkok in January for 2 nights and I%26#39;ve emailed Tong to organise a tour but she is already booked. Can you anyone recommend another guide in Tong%26#39;s team which is also good? We are only there for 2 full days so I want to make sure we see the best sights with a really good guide.

Tong is already booked - please help

Hi Simmo,

Try Jan, she has been excellent in communicating with me about tours for next year.

We have booked her for day trips around the city and also a day tip to Railway Market, Floating Market and Bridge on the River Kwai.

Her e-mail is noobo@yahoo.com

Cheers,

Stewie.

We just did a tour with Chob at www.thaitourguide.com, and he was fantastic. Told us everything about how to enjoy Bangkok, how to get around, customs, food, and also gave us a great tour of the Grand Palace, Emerald Buddha, and Reclining Budda, together with a long boat ride on the Klongs. Best tour guide we%26#39;ve had in a long time.

We have done several tours with Grasshopper Adventure Tours in Thailand. They are a fabulous little Aussie owned and operated business. Check out their website. www.grasshopperadventures.com. Grasshopper also work with local guides. I promise you won%26#39;t be disappointed if you do a tour with Grasshopper. I think their tours are better value than Tong%26#39;s and Jason always responds to emails.

Grasshopper does cycling tours, walking tours, anything to suite your needs. FYI am joining yet another Grasshopper Tour through Vietnam in 4 weeks! Can%26#39;t wait.

Hi

we have been in contact with Wandee and Linda from there is very prompt in answering our emails. The prices that are quoted seem comparable with other tours. We are opting for private tours for our 3 days in Bangkok in November.

enjoy your stay

Thanks everyone for all of your recommendations, I%26#39;m sure to find a good guide now.

All the guides in Tong%26#39;s team are excellent. Have a great holiday.

Snorkelling near Centara Karon

We are staying here in January %26amp; I am just wondering if Karon Beach is a good snorkelling place, having never been to Phuket before I am unsure.

Are we best to take our snorkelling gear (as we have done this before to Fiji %26amp; Vanuatu). Obviously we won%26#39;t bother if there%26#39;s not much to see at the local beach.

Thanks in advance.

Snorkelling near Centara Karon

I stayed at the Centara Karon in Fen this year. The beach is a few minutes walk away but the best snorling done when we did the Phi Phi island trip.

We took our own snorkelling stuff, the tide was a bit strong when I went on Karon beach, hence the lack of snorkling there.

Snorkelling near Centara Karon

Sea was too rough when we were there. There are rocks at either end of Karon beach where you might see something, but I don%26#39;t think Karon beach has much to see. You could take your masks and snorkels with you for tours, though the ones provided on snorkelling trips eg 3 island tour, do the job. I even found flippers that fit. Mask and snorkel don%26#39;t take up much room, I%26#39;d take them anyway.

hello we were in phuket last january and in fact this january as well!.The water at karon is quite calm at that time.I saw more people snorkeling at kata noi.I didn%26#39;t even bother because we had been to ko racha,ko kradan,ko rok,ko phi phi.E.T.C.Do yourself a favour and take a day trip.Ko racha is quite close? .Or ko phi phi of course

Between November to April the southern end of Karon Beach offers a pleasant snorkelling site. We scuba dive there regularly during these months and the marine life can be very surprising. Also both ends of Kata beach and the southern end of Kata Noi Beach are worth a visit.

For a great day out Koh Racha Yai is well worth it and any of the many Dive Centers on Phuket can arrange this day trip for you.

Also I recommend that you bring your own snorkelling gear as nothing fits better than your own equipment. If you dont bring your own there are plenty of Dive Centers in the area where you can rent some. Prices around 350 baht per day for mask, snorkel and fins. You can also rent from the vendors on the beach but in most cases their equipment is a little inferior.

Regards

Chantal.

Thanks everyone, gotta love this forum, full of information! Will pack our snorkel stuff and go exploring I think.

Cheers

  • air asia like ryanair ?

Is air asia like easy jet ie. if you book early it%26#39;s cheaper but if you book last minute price goes up

    air asia like ryanair ?

    Pretty much, yes!

But it has a higher class feel to it. First, as opposed to Ryainair, you don%26#39;t fly from nowhere to nowhere, but use major airports. It also lacks the, to my mind, over-the-top onboard advertisement like Ryanair.

But it is a no-frills airline, with extra pay for luggage, drinks and food, as well as for the privilege to board first. At the end, if you book early enough, this airline is a bargain.

    air asia like ryanair ?

Higher class than Ryanair...not on the flights I%26#39;ve taken. They are also a bit unreliable punctuality wise, but otherwise OK. I%26#39;ve had cheaper flights with other carriers so its worth shopping around.

They are a low cost carrier but much classier.

';if you book early it%26#39;s cheaper but if you book last minute price goes up'; - that is generally the case but they have frequent sales.

Subscribe to the AirAsia Email newsletter to be notified of them when you can get very cheap flights depending on your dates.

There is one on at the moment ending 25th October for flights 11th Jan to 30th April 2010 with some destinations from 9th November 2009 to 10th Jan 2010.

    See http://www.airasia.com/site/en/home.jsp

    %26lt;%26lt;extra pay for luggage, drinks and food, as well as for the privilege to board first%26gt;%26gt;

    The Express Boarding became obsolete when Air Asia introduced assigned seating on all flights last February. Now there%26#39;s still the option to pay a fee to book a particular seat, and a higher fee to book a ';Hot Seat.';

We used then twice in august and they were fine, they left ahead on time of thai air. costly fines for smaller airlines that miss their slots o IMO they more cutomer orientated..

I would also use jet star , in fact the only time i used thai they cancelled the flight .

    Alternative to Kuoni

I%26#39;m starting to get prices for my honeymoon next year and would like some opinions on different travel agencies please.

    I%26#39;ve used Kuoni before and found their service first class just looking to compare prices etc;

I%26#39;ve also booked my own holidays after getting quotes off Kuoni and saved a good few quid, but would rather sit back and let somebody else do all the leg work and want a hassle free honeymoon.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Alternative to Kuoni

I recommend Travel Counsellors. Tell them what you want and they%26#39;ll put an itinerary together - or ask them to prepare some ideas for you.

I%26#39;ve used them for a number of years and they have produced excellent trips including Laos, Cambodia, Australia - and Thailand next February.

You may be interested to know they have just been voted the UK%26#39;s best travel agents at the annual Guardian and Observer travel awards for a third time

    Alternative to Kuoni

Trailfinders also provide an excellent service, either on-line, over the phone or by spending time with one of their travel consultants at, say, their Manchester Office.

    Hallo,

I%26#39;ve used Tropical Collection for the last three years on trips to Thailand and Malaysia and have always been impressed. Ask for Linda if you can, she is brilliant and will spend lots of time going through options and I have never felt pressured to buy by her, I have found that when you factor in transfers and upgraded rooms they often have better prices than me doing the trip separately.

The website is www.tropicalcollection.co.uk and shows some example trips but they also do bespoke packages.

    Happy honeymoon

    Cheers jazz

I%26#39;ve have always thought Kuoni the best but have also used Hayes and Jarvis.

When we used to use an op we preferred Premier Holidays used to get loads of upgrades through them and better rooms than Kuoni seemed to get.

    Travelcounsellors, Best@, Destinology, netflight.com.

I play them off against one another. I used travel counsellors for my Thailand trip but only after netflights came with the cheapest quote which they matched.

netflights but this year premire holidays who are supported by sky appear to have great deals , ive used them once and they were fine as are netflights and traillfinders

    Advice on Chatuchak mkt

    Hi

will be going to the famous mkt for the first time. being a first timer and knowing how big the place is, any tips on visiting the mkt will be much appreciated. also, any must eat, must see things there? since we may not have time to cover the entire mkt, would like to know what we shouldn%26#39;t miss while we are there. btw, there are 5 of us, 2 adults and 3 kids.

    thks

    Advice on Chatuchak mkt

My advice would be prepare yourself for oppressive (devoid of fresh breeze) HEAT!

If your kids are with you, keep the cold water handy.

    Advice on Chatuchak mkt

Just wander round and enjoy the place - to my mind it is impossible to have a structured/planned visit there.

have heard how hot it is in there....but as we are going there at end of Dec, sure hope it is not that bad but yes, will definitely bring lots of cold drinks, juz in case...

No need to bring cold drinks - it is a market and they will sell you cold drinks.

    Hi Octopusmum

You will have a fantastic time there, I am always effected by the heat and was there in September but didn%26#39;t find it too bad, a lot of the stalls have fans (and some aircon units) so I did tend to spend more time loking at the goods in these stalls ;O)

Before we went I bought the Nancy Chandler Bangkok Map, this has a plan of the market and and i think this did help us orientate ourselves before the visit, i didn%26#39;t use the map in the market as we just wandered and stopped where we wanted and carried on walking through if it was too hot, stuffy and smelly but it was reasuring to know how to get back to %26#39;our exit%26#39;.

Regarding what to see it depends on the interests of your group, there are loads of clothes and fashion stalls but we particularly liked the crafts and jewelry available. We did end up walking through the pet section and considering you have kids I would prob give this a miss, I didn%26#39;t see any cruelty but there are puppies, kittens and rabbits in the heat and some looked a bit hot and bothered.

Also as Senjan has said there are drinks available everywhere and they are kept in big tanks with ice so they are cold, we bought a couple of sealed bottles of water for about 10baht which was much better than having to carry them round all day.

Finally a last tip is to ensure you wear mozzie spray as I got bitten, nothing serious but annoying and also take some anti bac hand wipes or gel. With the huge numbers of people going to the market it is a hot bed for germs so just an easy precaution.

    Have a great time

    Jazz

My advice would be go early morning to avoid the crowd and the heat. And most of the items offered are repetitive.

Plus, if you do need a drink, there are stalls selling freshly squeezed orange juice :)

As with any crowded venue, it%26#39;s a paradise for pick pockets and purse snatchers. Keep a tight hold on your valuables.

With everyone handling everything, it is a good place to spread germs. Keep your hands clean and away from your face.

Pick a meeting point in case you get separated.

Rest assured that, after you have made you best deal on you r purchase, the next stall will beat it!

The comment about pets in the market looking hot and bothered needs to taken in context. Thailand is a hot country, and pets in my house, or any where else will look and probably feel hot and bothered but they are born to it and live with it just as we do. No doubt pets in Norway or where ever will feel the cold :)

The puppies do look a bit sad and run down. But, then again, so do most of the tourists wandering JJ Market!!

    ;-)

    Hi

If you find something you like at the market buy it then.

If you think about and try and go back to buy it later. you may not find the stall again LOL. I have a favorite store I like to buy shirts from. it always takes me an hr to find it. and I have the address.

all of the stalls are marked and have number%26#39;s but is really confusing.

it is easy to get seperated and lost from group.

always have a few baht coins for the toilets

AirAsia...many NEW direct Phuket flights coming

Thai AirAsia intends to open more routes connecting Phuket directly with other Asian cities as it moves aggressively to develop its second hub on the southern resort island.

The no-frills carrier wants to link Phuket with Bali, Surabaya, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Manila through non-stop services as new city-pairs after the first links due to open in mid-November.

Chief executive Tassapon Bijleveld said the airline was upbeat about the growth opportunities Phuket could provide in addition to its main hub at Bangkok%26#39;s Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Thai AirAsia is preparing to begin daily services on the Phuket-Hong Kong and Phuket-Jakarta routes on Nov 15, followed by flights from Phuket to Chiang Mai, Medan in Indonesia and Ho Chi Minh City in December.

Pending positive results, Mr Tassapon said the second set of direct air links with Asian cities could open in 18 months

';We need three or four months to prove that our decision to make Phuket our second hub is right commercially before we make further stride,'; he said.

    ';We could easily fly in 2,000 tourists a day from those foreign cities to Phuket, ramping up from 600 people a day initially we expect from the first batch of cities.';

That means Thai AirAsia would need to base four A320 jetliners at Phuket to accommodate the direct connections, up from the two that it will station there in the next one or two months.

The sister carrier of Malaysia-based AirAsia, Asia%26#39;s largest budget carrier, is also looking at other airports in Thailand including Chiang Mai, Udon Thani and U-tapao as potential hubs for new flight markets.

Chiang Mai is the most likely candidate for a third hub but Mr Tassapon stressed that the bulk of Thai AirAsia%26#39;s services would continue through Suvarnabhumi.

';The problem is that we cannot open as many new routes through Suvarnabhumi as we wanted to as the network through Bangkok has thickened already,'; he explained, adding that the airline%26#39;s fleet had also been growing and needed new routes to match it.

The airline now operates a fleet of ten Airbus A320s and six Boeing B737- 300s. Over the next two months it will take delivery of two new A320s. Next year it will receive eight more A320s and retire its six B737-300s, giving it a fleet of 20 aircraft, all A320s.

Mr Tassapon believes that its initial flights through Phuket will be 80% full, due largely to the high-season factor and heavy promotions.

';Phuket is a probably the second most well-known Thai city internationally, so that helps a lot to sell our flights,'; he said.

The airline has already sold more than 20,000 Phuket-Hong Kong tickets since they went on sale on Oct 5.

AirAsia...many NEW direct Phuket flights coming

Argh - was so hoping they%26#39;d be direct to Perth!!!

AirAsia...many NEW direct Phuket flights coming

Hi...!!....Just a thought but I registered with Airasia on September 1st and have not received any specials or anything from Airasia since registering...??....

Has Airasia not had any specials since September....??....

Anyway,I am not intending to travel till next year, but it would be nice to know if anybody has received any deals....??....

I%26#39;ve been registered with AirAsia Email alerts for a while and have certainly received at least one since September. Just testing (and tempting!) we could book return flights (2 x single though it%26#39;s cheaper!) for March from Kuala Lumpur to Gold Coast for £58 (plus £38 for Phuket to KL!!!!) incl. taxes but excluding add-ons for bahggage etc. Food for thought for next year (2011)

I have registered and never received any alerts. Best to look in the newspaper, the sales are always pre-listed there.

Phuket-Bali double ! Oh Rex, you%26#39;ve done it again.

I have been registered with Air Asia for about 18 months and get a ';specials email'; from them approx every 4-6 weeks.

I have done test runs on their specials and sometimes actually get a ';reservation'; for both out and return (from Gold Coast) but usually it only gives the cheap fare on one leg. But I do know people who have been lucky - my daughters inlaw flew GC-KL_HKT return in Jly-Aug for under $500 all up!! but they weren%26#39;t tied to dates (holidays from work).

We are flying SIA leaving Saturday - but cos we got cheap fares couldn%26#39;t change any flights so have booked HKT to Singapore on AA. Will see what is like. We are first timers, looking forward to Saturday :)

Yea the tickets are quite cheap from AirAsia, i booked my flight for March 2010 to phuket and it cost me only SGD $166 for 2 pax, not including checked in baggages and insurance though.

Does anyone know when and if Air asia will fly out of Sydney?

That%26#39;s what i would like to know too Kitty....

It%26#39;s a real hassle when we have to fly or drive from Sydney to Gold Coast or Melbourne and then fly out to Phuket...!!??...Not to mention the return journey...!!??....

You rooly start to wonder if AirAsia%26#39;s deals are worthwhile if we have to do this..??...

direct flights from Phuket - CM is fantastic.. gives me an extra half a day to enjoy thailand.. rather than do the airport shuffle... :)

Sydney needs a low cost terminal if AirAsia is ever going to fly out of there. Maybe if Badgery%26#39;s Creek had ever come to fruition, oh well.

    Where to stay in Bangkok

Hi! My husband and I will be spending the first week of January in Thailand, splitting our time between Chiang Mai and Bangkok. I am looking for hotel recommendations in the $80-$100 per night range for Bangkok. We%26#39;d like to do some temple tours, enjoy a bit of the nightlife, maybe do a bit of shopping, etc. so I%26#39;d like somewhere that is conveniently located. Thank you!

    Where to stay in Bangkok

Anywhere along the skytrain line - lower Sukhumvit, Ploenchit, Siam, Silom. You can check through the reviews of hotels here on TA, then check rates (its peak season remember) on one of the many online booking services like asiarooms.com, agoda.com etc

Also check the ';Top Questions About Bangkok'; on the top right of this page, and the ';Top Questions About Thailand'; on the main Thailand forum page.

    Where to stay in Bangkok

I second that! We stayed in silom a few times and liked it (both the montien hotel and then the silom serene which we liked much better) but now favour sukhumvit as it is much more pleasant. Access to a BTS skytrain station is key, for example hotels along soi 3,5,7,7,9 along sukhumvit road will put you close to NANA station. We have stayed in the Bel Aire Princess and it was great but next time will try the Amari Boulevard if the price is right as it is much nearer to the station, and it is so hot to walk very far.

last time we were on a budget and stayed in the royal president- it was okay but not as nice as the other places we have stayed. the big plus point was that if you booked the 2 night package you could check in at 8am, so we could sleep off the jet lag immediately on arrival. We asked to upgrade our room for an extra 300B but it is cheaper to do this on arrival than in advance.

A good tip- try www.latestays.com for good rates if you can bear to wait until a couple of weeks before arrival. Also, sometimes there is a big difference in price if breakfast is included. There are many places to grab breakfast; we liked Foodland (don%26#39;t be put off by the name!) a supermarket on soi 5 which has a lunch counter, like the diners I grew up with in the states, where breakfast will about 100B and you can see them cooking it in front of you. great fun.

Are you sorted out for chiang mai?- we like the centara duangtawan

DTAC Cell Phone Booth at Airport?

Of all the answers I got for purchasing a cell phone just to use in Thailand for 2 week, the best and most convenient, was at the DTAC booth at the airport. If anyone can tell me what the cost would be, I can compare it to MBK%26#39;s price, or maybe a better suggestion?

    Thanks,

    wassala

DTAC Cell Phone Booth at Airport?

I think MBK would be cheaper and with a much wider range of phones. DTAC are a mobile phone service provider and retail the phones mad by other companies at full price. I also have a feeling that the airport booth is for renting phones.

How much time is needed between flight connections in Bkk

Our international flight gets into Bangkok airport at 7am and I%26#39;m looking at a flight to Phuket at 8:30am. Is this realistically possible?

Would appreciate first hand info. Thanks

How much time is needed between flight connections in Bkk

    Hi

    NO

    I like a min of 2hrs

    unless same airline

How much time is needed between flight connections in Bkk

Much depends on who you are flying with on each leg. Domestic budget airlines close their check in 45 minutes before departure, which leave little time for getting off the plane, walking to immigration, clearing immigration, waiting for bags, then walking to the domestic check in. Your international flight arrival time in Bangkok is the time the wheels touch the runway - it can typically take 15 minutes to reach the arrival gate after that.

Best Area to Stay - First Time in Thailand

I am travelling with my husband and 7 year old daughter to Thailand. We will be spending 3 days in Phuket, 3 days on safari in Khao Sok, 2 days in Phi Phi and 3 days in Koh Samui. We want to be in a beautiful area on the beach for some relaxed times with our daughter, but don%26#39;t want to be too far away from some life like bars, shopping, etc.

where would be the best area in Phuket to start looking for a hotel. Any hotel recommendations would be good also. We want to good hotel on the beach.

    Thank you

Best Area to Stay - First Time in Thailand

Hi Clemina, really depends on your budget. I suggest Patong beach for first timers. If you want on the beach, then look at Beach Road. Ratathit Road has many hotels, and is a few hundred meters from the beach. There are many booking sites including Tripadvisor....click the hotels button above.

Best Area to Stay - First Time in Thailand

    I%26#39;d go with Karon Beach.

It%26#39;s sufficiently quiet when you need it to be, but also busy enough in terms of shopping, dining and entertainment. If you really crave more action you can go to Patong, which is only a short drive (3 km) away.

I personally wouldn%26#39;t like to stay in Patong with a kid, there tends to be quite a few charachters around. Patong Beach is extremely busy, the beach is packed and there are loads of watersport (jetskis) around. Your child would be better off playing on a nice, quieter beach away from all the unsavoury elements.

Some people also like Kata Beach a lot, but it%26#39;s a bit too quiet for me.

    Hi Clemina

Tht is a very packed itinerary, you will be spending a lot of your holiday travelling which, if it is in %26#39;high season%26#39; (and especially the peak from mid December over Christmas to end of January) is going to be a bit of a hassle at times.

I wonder about spending 8 days at three different %26#39;beach%26#39; resorts? I would knock off Koh Samui and spend more time in Phuket given your interests but, hey, it%26#39;s YOUR holiday.

Despite what %26#39;Cornflake Girl%26#39; says, I would opt for Patong for a three day stay. (You do not mention the age of your daughter, by the way), but friends of mine who have holidayed with young children have never experienced any problems).

A friend and I have put together a tip sheet over the 15 years or so we have been visiting Phuket.

It is a sort of %26#39;quick start%26#39; for your holiday suggests places to go, places to eat and, of course, places to shop as well as information on things like drinking water, currency exchange and so on! Something to carry with you and totally non-commercial.

If you - or anyone else reading this post -would like a copy, just email me: rfdunedin@ymail.com.

If you wish, I will also include some notes on accommodation.

    Cheers!

This depends so much on what you are looking for.

For ';relaxed times'; as you state, I would avoid Patong. Great place to visit for a night out, and see all the sights and sounds, but I really wouldn%26#39;t like to stay there myself. It is like the Blackpool of Phuket.

I would suggest Bangtao beach. Beautiful beach, still with lots of beachside restaurants and bars, and for the evenings, there is also a little village just out the back of the Laguna complex, with more restaurants and bars.

Patong/Karon is within reach by taxi, but I think you get more relaxed days away from these beaches.

holiday inn patong or melin beach resort ( not patong merlin).

your daughter will love the holiday. good markets out the back of the holiday inn at night.

When we were booking our tour to Similian islands and decided to use Patong as our base in December, the tour agency warned us that it%26#39;s not a very good place for young children/families. We had already booked our hotel in Patong however, and we will be spending very little time there. If you go to youtube.com and type in Patong, you can get some idea of what to expect I imagine. Guess we%26#39;ll find out in a couple of months ourselves, lol. :) If we were spending any time there though, we would not base ourselves out of Patong, just based on what we%26#39;ve heard/seen.

Oh and kiwilad, she does mention the age of her daughter.. she is 7 yo.

    ';...3 days on safari in Khao Sok, 2 days in Phi Phi and 3 days in Koh Samui.';

For the bulk of your trip you will be away from hustle and bustle. So don%26#39;t rule out Patong. Consider it an adventure. As long as you make judicious choices, it%26#39;s truly not as bad as some people make it out to be. Consider the Holiday Inn Patong for your stay, especially the Busakorn section if you can afford it.

    ';...We want to be in a beautiful area on the beach for some relaxed times with our daughter, but don%26#39;t want to be too far away from some life like bars, shopping,etc.';

So Bang Tao, despite it%26#39;s loveliness, is not a great option. IMO, you want somewhere like a favourite of mine, the Kata Beach Resort, right on the beach in Kata. 20 minutes or so from Patong shopping and nightlife, or Phuket City shopping. Stay in a deluxe room, gives a sea view.

But really, for a 3 day stay, you will be better off in Patong. Stay somewhere like Duangjitt, Amari Coral Beach or Merlin Beach resort and you wont even know you are in Patong (Duangjitt is not on the beach, just a short walk away; Merlin Beach resort has it%26#39;s own rocky beach and is a short tuk tuk ride away from Patong).

Kata beach is a much nicer beach than Patong beach, but you will get plenty of nice-beach life on Phi Phi %26amp; Koh Samui. And if you move away from the jetski areas, Patong beach is certainly nice enough.

Patong will be a good counterpoint to the rest of your trip.

For me it would be Karon as you have Kata to one side of you and Patong to the other and both only cost 100-150 baht by taxi to get to.

Karon has the same kind of shopping and dining as Patong and Kata but is more family friendly. It still has a good nightlife - it%26#39;s just on a smaller scale to Patong. Patong does have a lot to offer as it%26#39;s very busy and more of a Torremolinos/Benidorm type resort packed out with the hustle and bustle and loads of bars. Personally, I%26#39;d rather stay in Karon and visit Patong during the day or for an evening and return to Karon.

Staying in Karon means you can also go to Kata for the Reggae bar with your daughter to see the sunset. It%26#39;s set in to the hillside and offers a great view.

As for a hotel, Baan Suay in Karon has a family suite which may suit you more than a big chain hotel - I stayed there and it is beautiful, the staff are fantastic and it%26#39;s just a 2 minute taxi ride or 10 minute walk to the beach. If you need anything booking, day trips etc, they can either book them for you or help you out for no cost. They are fantastic and very family friendly. The owners%26#39; little boy and girl are there quite a lot.

    baansuayphuket.com/phuketpages/accomodation/…

Thank you for all your replies they have been really useful. Think I am going to go to Karon as I can visit Patong and Kata from there.

    Thanks

We stayed in patong in august at the holiday inn and my young kids ( 3 years and 1.5 years had a great time)We didnt see anything that offended us or made us uncomfortable ( even though we are middle eastern and come from quite a conservative place) the holiday inn is a great place for families..they have a kiddie pool / toddler pool and a kids club. Easy access to patong beach..Plenty of eateries and shopping close to it.

Maybe coz we visited patong in the low season we didnt see anyting that isnt suitable for kids, but my teenage brother and sister even said that patong wasnt as bad and some people were warning them.

    Khao Sok

Has anyone stopped at the accomodation in Khao Sok called Nature Resort. Need to choose between Arts Lodge which I have seen lots of reviews of and one called the Nature Resort, but cant find any reviews of this one.

    Thanks

  • China Southern Airlines - long haul, anyone done it?

Hello, I am traveling to Thailand this Christmas and have a seat reserved on Cathay Pacific from LAX to BKK, however another flight from LAX to BKK on China Southern Airlines is significantly cheaper, with some drawbacks.

Has anyone flown China Southern long haul (10 hours or so) to Guangzhou? If so was there enough space? Personal tv/movie screen? Free alcohol? Sufficient food?

After flying Singapore Airlines, it%26#39;s hard to go back.

    Thank you!

    Phuket to Chiang Mai

My husband and I will spend a week in Phuket with our 2 year old son and would then like to go to Chiang Mai. Can someone please advise on what is the easiest and shortest way of getting to CM from Phuket. Thanks!

    Phuket to Chiang Mai

    Fly - http://www.thaiair.com

    Phuket to Chiang Mai

I also believe that AirAsia plan to open that route, possibly not until the new year though.

Yep, easiest and shortest way is a ticket with Thai Air or Bangkok Air, but it won%26#39;t come cheap.

I%26#39;m pretty sure that neither fly direct (although there%26#39;s a direct flight once per day in the opposite direction on Thai).

You can also get there with Air Asia and Nok Air, it%26#39;s a little more involved but a lot cheaper.

    Check these links out for more info;

    tripadvisor.com/Travel-g293915-c13997/Thaila…

    tripadvisor.com/Travel-g293915-c118670/Thail…

*What%26#39;s with all the double posts today and yesterday?

Yep, as Fourb2 posted, no direct flights between the two yet though Thai Airways does offer the C. Mai to Phuket direct route. Going from Phuket still requires a conncetion via BKK.

Do these connections mean a change of plane or simply a stop?

    Thanks everyone for your help!

If Air Asia, for sure it%26#39;s a change of planes since you%26#39;ll be required to retrieve your checked in luggage and checkin for your connecting flight.

We%26#39;ll use Thai Air. Does that mean changing planes? Really don%26#39;t like the idea of doing this with my little one. How about trains? Are there fast trains in Thailand?

No, no bullet trains like Europe and Japan.

Frequently the flights are only a little more than the train tickets though that does not factor in transport cost to/from the airport/s.

Some prefer to use the overnight sleeper trains to save on the cost of a hotel room + getting to a destination at the same time but that%26#39;s quite subject to each traveler%26#39;s taste and requirements.

As to other airlines such as Thai Airways or Bangkok Airways, I think it really depends on how they route their flights and it%26#39;s possible that it could still be the same plane but I think you%26#39;ll still need to get off the plane though with these 2 airlines, your luggage is likely to be checked through to Chiang Mai whereas the budget carriers require you to retrieve your luggage.

I don%26#39;t know for sure but perhaps one of the regulars who%26#39;s very knowledgeable on the airline industry will chime in later. He really knows his stuff when it comes to the airline industry.

As I mentioned watch for Airasia depending on when you intend to travel. If the new hub in Phuket starts operating this December there will be direct flights to Chiang Mai.......

%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;Thai AirAsia intends to open more routes connecting Phuket directly with other Asian cities as it moves aggressively to develop its second hub on the southern resort island.

    Thai AirAsia is preparing to begin daily services on the Phuket-Hong Kong and Phuket-Jakarta routes on Nov 15, followed by flights from Phuket to Chiang Mai, Medan in Indonesia and Ho Chi Minh City in December. %26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

direct flights Phuket - CM will be great... gives an extra half a day to spend enjoying the holiday rather than doing the airport shuffle... :)

Koh Phangan & Koh Tao - day trips

    Hi

staying in samui for 5 nights in dec/Jan and am thinking of doing a day trip to koh phangan and koh Tao. We are not planning to go for swimming so was wondering if there it%26#39;s possible to start first thing in the morning and island hop to both of these places for a look and back to samui late afternoon. Or even if this sort of island hop can be done ?

Any suggestions on what sightseeing things can be done on these islands ?

    Thanks!

Koh Phangan %26amp; Koh Tao - day trips

    Anyone?

Koh Phangan %26amp; Koh Tao - day trips

    Hi Elisa

We will be there in November and hope to do something similar for a day. Will post a JBR. Have you googled any of the tour operators in Samui?

    Enjoy

Awesome, can%26#39;t wait for your jbr ! No I haven%26#39;t actually, I was thinking of doing it our selves catching ferry Over and doing our own sightseeing but I think I might start researching the tours, would probably save time.

Thanks and enjoy your holiday-the end of the year is coming quickly, not too much longer to wait!

    First time to Thialand

    Hi,

We will be staying in Patong for 16 nights the first two weeks of Dec and as it is our first visit to Thialand just wondered if anyone had any advice as to what trips are worth doing,i%26#39;m keen on photography and we like most animals, any help would be great!

    we are middle aged.

    Thank%26#39;s.

    Mick

    First time to Thialand

Just curious, are you spending your whole trip to Thailand in Patong? Or are you heading to other places as well?

I would highly recommend going up north to Chaing Mai at least for a few days. There is the Elephant Nature Park up there, great for photo ops. We went there in January 2009 and are going back this December. It was one of the highlights of our trip. YOu can pet and feed the elephants as well as bathe them in the river. You can observe them in a more natural enviroment and really see their personalities shine through. Several babies have been born this year.Elephant Nature park does not do circus shows, does not do rides. It is a sanctuary for elephants, they are not forced to do anything. ENP has been awarded by and commended by organizations such as Time Magazine, National Geographic, Animal Planet and the Humane society of the United States. Highly recommended.

There%26#39;s lots of other things to do as well around Chiang Mai. For adventure, there%26#39;s ATV tours, white water rafting, bamboo rafting, horseback riding, ziplining. You can visit some beautiful wats and temples, the most widely known being Doi Suthep on the mountain. Some amazing photo opportunities here. There are national parks nearby.. Chiang Dao with caving, and Doi Inthanon. For shopping there%26#39;s the night bazaar and the sunday night walking market. There is also a night safari and a zoo in Chiang Mai.

Also if you have the time, it%26#39;s well worth a visit to Khao Sok National Park. You can spend one night or two in a treehouse in the jungle followed by a night in floating bamboo rafthouses on Chiaw Laan Lake. This was the highlight of our trip. The lake at dawn is breathtaking.. a perfect mirror of the surrounding limestone mountains and jungles, with the sound of gibbons calling. Almost a surreal experience. A definate not to be missed! And some of the best photos you%26#39;ll probably take!

We too will be visiting thailand for our 2nd trip beginning of December and are middle aged. :) This time we are going back to Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Krabi, Khao Sok as well as hitting up the Similian Islands for an overnight trip and Patong, but Patong only as a means for the Similians really. Patong is quite a party place.. not sure if you guys were aware of that. Phuket is quite commercialized and touristy too compared to other areas of Thailand. Krabi is a good choice for beach time..less touristy and very very beautiful! Limestone cliffs surround the area.

Anyway, if you are interested in seeing any of our pics, I have a few pics posted of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khao Sok, Krabi and Phi Phi ( took 2400 pics lol.. but only posted a handful):

    Katathani's Ocean Front Junior Suites

Has anyone stayed at the recently modeled Junior Suites at Katathani? Do the rooms have Andaman views or only the bath tubs? We stayed in the Grand Suite last time which was gorgeous and practically on the beach itself but I was thinking that something new would be different. Any advice from anyone who has seen these.

    Thanks!

    Katathani's Ocean Front Junior Suites

Hi, we stayed in a junior suite in July 2008 in the Ocean wing. I don%26#39;t know whether it was refurbished or not. The room we had, had a beautiful view of the sea. Here%26#39;s the link.

ATMs and Currency Exchange in Karon?

Hi are there any ATMs in Karon, and are there Currency Exchange places in Karon? We are staying at Horizon Karon so something nearby there would be convenient.

    Thanks.

ATMs and Currency Exchange in Karon?

There are more ATMs in Karon than tourists.

ATMs and Currency Exchange in Karon?

Mrs J %26#39;s middle name could well be hyperbole but there are plenty of ATM%26#39;s and money changers in Karon.

If using ATM%26#39;s will be your preferred method of currency exchange, do yourself a favour and search these forums about the Wizard Mastercard. By far the cheapest method of using ATM%26#39;s, with the only fee being the 150 Baht imposed by the Thai banks on foreign withdrawals. With other cards, there are normally other fees on top of this (from your bank of issue) which can include any or all of a set dollar fee, a percentage of the withdrawal, and a currency conversion fee. Apparently the Travelex or Cash Passport fees are worse.

Make sure you tell your card provider you will be using your card overseas before you go, or they may freeze your funds until they can contact you.

  • Kata Accomodation

Is there any accommodation in Kata in right on the beach except Katathani Beach Resort?

    Kata Accomodation

    Hi

Have a look at kata beach resort and Mom Tris,s Boathouse

    Kata Accomodation

Thanks Jenson. I have take a look at both of your suggestion. Mom Boathouse are totally out of my budget because the rates are about the same with Katathani. Most of the resort doesnt come with any package for March 2010 yet. Is it because its too early or usually hotel don%26#39;t have any promotion package on High Season?

Kata Beach resort is right on the beach. The grounds and pool are not as good as Katathani, but it is a nice hotel in a more convenient location. It%26#39;s in the heart of Kata Beach, where all the shops and restaurants are located. Katathani is on Kata Noi beach, a kilometre or two away.

Friends stayed at KBR this year in May and got a pay 2 stay 3 deal, which for a deluxe (sea view) room worked out to be about 2800 baht per night, including breakfast. You must stay in a deluxe room there if you want a view.

I%26#39;m pretty sure KBR has these pay/stay deals every year, but I don%26#39;t remember seeing one before mid April.

Places like Kata Palm (5? minute walk from the beach) have pay/stay (or other) deals every year that work out really cheap. I%26#39;d rather pay a bit more and be right on the beach, but it gets down to what it%26#39;s worth to you. 1,000 baht per night goes a long way in Phuket.

    bangkok pattaya

any tips for what to watch out for in bangkok or pattaya

    bangkok pattaya

Can you please clarify what you mean by ';what to watch out for';?

    Starting Over again

Okay, the Ambassador Hotel reservation was scrapped. Now I%26#39;m back at square one looking for suggestions.

I%26#39;ve done some research on Expedia where I%26#39;ve been working on some research and some other options which came up were the Salil Hotell and the Aspen Suites. But then again Expedias mapping service really sucks so I can%26#39;t pinpoint the hotel locations with any certainty within a few blocks. Using Google maps only provided more uncertainty as it seems there are either mutiple locations with the same name or people are creating multiple markers for the sties.

Hopefully I%26#39;m not being too unreasonable. A location which can provide Internet access, either in the room or in a public location, would be nice. An in-room safe helps for security and a place to keep the laptop. Roughly 28-50 sq meters of space is fine, just something nice but not cramped.

My intentions are to spend a week in Bangkok touring the palaces, shrines and other venues during the day, and then exploring Patpong%26#39;s, Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy at night. This is a solo venture where I%26#39;ll be having guests over.

Note: When I looked up the Fortuna website at work I didn%26#39;t realize it was going to blast music down the hallway. Unfortunately Expedia didn%26#39;t have a listing for this hotel.

    Starting Over again

somewhere on sukhumvit would be good ,nana is around soi4 and soi cowboy roundabout soi 20 ,you have a skytrain for transport, you can use the skytrain to join up with the river taxi,s for ttransport to the temples. not all hotels are guest friendly so check that out .what is your budget?

    Starting Over again

Around $40-$100/night would work. Anything over $100 seems to be just bragging rights about the hotel or cost which doesn%26#39;t seem to add any real value to the trip to me.

Being within the Sukhumvit area looks workable. Either around Nana Plaza or between there and Soi Cowboy. If only there were some online maps which were more consistent with locating places. It just drives me nuts that a search for a hotel comes up on multiple sites at multiple locations which may not be in the same area at all.

Hopefully the room would be a non-smoking option. I%26#39;m not a non-smoking fanatic but it is a preference. While I am traveling solo, a king/queen bed is preferred to a single bed. Since I%26#39;m coming in from Tokyo having a bit of room will be welcomed.

While all of these options are overwhelming, I guess this is good for Bangkok since it shows how hospitable the area is for outsiders to visit with all of these options.

    Agoda%26#39;s mapping is pretty good. Go to this page;

    agoda.com.au/asia/…emporium_suites_hotel.html

... and click on the map at the top right hand side of the page.... it%26#39;ll show you just about ALL the hotel locations -zoom in and out as required.

type ..guest friendly ..into the search engine above ,its the empty box next too the bangok forum box.you will find plenty of advice .

You can check out www.sawasdee.com . We%26#39;ve used them extensively in our visits to Thailand and have always found them very good with information, reviews, pictures and maps. Plus their prices are very competitive and usually the best we%26#39;ve found.

    jbr 4 wonderful days.

Only had 4 days in Patong this trip, we went to Maylasia a couple of months ago so this was just a very quick R and R.

Arrived at The Duangjitt Resort about 9.30 pm absolutely buggared. Had spent the day strolling the streets of KL.

Have stayed at the Duangjitt before and loved it, we were not disappointed this time either, it is a lovely resort away from the crowds with probably one of the best pools in patong (it actually has 3 pools)

Woke the next morning to a glorious day had a coffee on the balcony and soaked up the atmosphere while hubby snored on.

Walked along the beach and watched the fisherman hauling in there load then headed back for brekkie.

Spent most the day around the pool just relaxing and so that went for the next 3 days.

Didnt do alot at all, spent the days around the pool walking shopping and of course eating.

Had a facial in junceylon $10

best massage we had was down stairs in Junceylon at Mantra, very clean professional and very good.

all in all again it was a fantastic holiday. I actually thought i would be over Patong after this trip , but no I actually cant wait to go back again in May.

    Weather

Only rained on our last day. from about 8am - 11am

There is still so much to do and places to go, I cant believe how big it is getting though, there is still so many new places springing up. Last year here wasnt anything out the front of the Duangjitt, now there is a whole new plaza of shops and bars.

They actually do a fabulous take away cocktail out the front of the Duangjitt with or without alcohol for 30bht or 70 bht,

Wish I was still there, but hey only 7 months to go.............

    Deb

    jbr 4 wonderful days.

    Hi Deb,

    Thanks for your trip report.

Only a short trip but sounds like you enjoyed yourself.

    Where is the Bushrangers Restaurant?

    Cheers,

    Stewie.

    jbr 4 wonderful days.

Thanks for your trip report which validates our desires to visit Thailand. How was Malaysia for you?

Hey Deb, Thanks for the report. Good to see you back on the forum and back in Phuket!

We are off in December so can%26#39;t wait, but don%26#39;t see much relaxing happening with our crew.

I may pop over to Djuangitt and have a squizz, keep hearing good things but always forget about getting quotes for there.

Is Bushrangers new? I haven%26#39;t heard of it before.

    Take care, Sue

    Hi guys

Bushrangers is an Aussie bar (no surprise with a name like that) its just across the road from the markets next to Junceylon, we have been there every visit.

Hobbitew - we loved Malaysia especially K.L. it has a different feel to Thailand.

Penang was a bit too quiet for our liking but still nice.

We prefer the Thai food and just love the vibe of Patong. You can get right in the swing of nightlife or totally avoid it and just chill out, it has something for everyone.

    Hi Sue

Yes it was a short stay but probaly one of the most relaxing and enjoyable

Hope all is well with you, I see you have been jetsetting to a few different places. Good to hear from you

I just wanna go back again now

    Deb

Thanks for your report, sounds like a good 4 days Deb, Bushrangers Bar %26amp; Grill do a good mixed grill as well.

DD - what level of room did you stay in ? How was it ?

Gismo, do yourself a favour and if you visit Duangjitt, walk through their spa area gardens (they wont mind). It%26#39;s on your left as you enter the hotel, long before reception. In fact, at the end of the driveway, walk to your right and see just how big the biggest pool is. It makes the big pool at Patong Merlin look like a puddle.

    Tongs Team

    HI

I have booked a day trip with Tong in early December but unfortunately Tong won%26#39;t be available. She has offered her other guides - Kung, Pook %26amp; Tom. Has anyone used any of these guides and if so what did you think?

    Thanks

    Tongs Team

Hi, we used Pook who was brilliant. She spoke good english, taught us some thai, kept us refreshed with cool towels and drinks etc all day, and was very knowledgable about the places we visited. We can%26#39;t recommend her highly enough.

    Mark

    Tongs Team

I had Kung and she was fantastic , i also got to meet Tong at the Railway |market as well. She is lovely. But i was truely happy with Kung.

Kung was a lovely woman , excellent English, really friendly and at the end of the day i felt she was a good friend, we went to the tiger temple and she became chief photographer taking just under 300 photos with us and the cubs and she got into positons that i will never get into again to get the most amazing footage.

Id say her guides in term of ages are in their 30%26#39;s and older so have a lot of knowledge and experience .

She couldnt have done enough for her, to be honest i think Tong picks her guide really well and as a result offers a fantastic experience.

I don%26#39;t think it matters who you have from Tong%26#39;s team. They all seem to be very good. I can%26#39;t recall who we had earlier this year, but they were excellent. Nothing is too much trouble. Reclining seats in the sedan, refreshments and cool towels etc. You will not be disappointed.

    Hi

we havew just returned from Bangkok and were lucky enough to have Tong for both days but in saying that we did meet some of her other guides on the way they all seemed lovely. I think that all her guides are good as Tong has a reputation she wants to uphold.

    Cheers

    Josie

Hi, I%26#39;m just wondering what date you want from Tong, because we have two days booked with her in the beginning of the second week with her? I am waiting to hear from her to see what we can do (don%26#39;t know if she will get back to us or not :( ), so I%26#39;m not sure if we want to keep the two days or not. If not, maybe you might want our second day, or might want to join us on either of the days that we have with her?

Have you heard from her recently? I really want to finalize our plans with her, but it is so hard to get in touch with her...

In Bangkok now, and were meant to be going on a one day tour with a member of her team tomorrow, but she never got back to me regarding payment.

    Great service(!)

(And yes, I know she may be very busy as she runs the company herself etc etc, but she%26#39;ll run out of customers one day if she keeps ignoring people who want to use her sevice).

Thanks guys, I will leave it up to Tong to pick our guide as they all have good reviews!

Kamistis - thank you for your kind offer but unforunately we will only be in Bankok from 1st - 3rd December. I actually got hold of Tong last night (about 11pm BKK time) but it wasn%26#39;t a detailed reply or anything!

I was lucky enough to do the Fishermans Village last year with Tong (great day out). This year we would like to visit Bridge Over the River Kwai, ride on Death Railway and visit the War Cemetery.........do you think it%26#39;s worth the money and time just to see these?? I%26#39;m not into Tiger Temple and we don%26#39;t want to go Elephant Riding as we are doing thid in Chiang Mai.

    Thanks again everyone

We have finally managed to book a tour with tong tours but don%26#39;t know who we%26#39;ll be having as a guide as she hasn%26#39;t told us. It has been hard work and frustrating as her emails don%26#39;t answer all questions and are often confusing and sometimes seem a bit abrupt. I am assuming they pick you up from your hotel - does anyone know? - haven%26#39;t been told yet. Just hope the tour is going to be worth all the frustration! We stuck with her because we didn%26#39;t get a reply from any other tour companies we emailed - so I suppose we should count ourselves lucky!

Yes, the guide will pick you up from your hotel. From what I can remember last time, Tong will send you a confirmation email once the deposit has been made will pick up times ect. Hope this helps.

Mclal--once we got the deposit info and made our deposit, we got a confirmation number and the name of our guide, and confirmed that we%26#39;ll be picked up at our hotel.

Anyone have any experience with Nang? That%26#39;s our guide, and I haven%26#39;t seen the name pop up anywhere!!

    Cheap Airfares

Hi I need help, my husband %26amp; myself are trying to find a cheap arifare from Brisbane, Australia to Bangkok on the 22 Nov %26amp; then onto Chiang Mai or preferably Chiang Rai %26amp; then from Bangkok to Brisbane on about 1st or 2nd December. HELP!!!

    Cheap Airfares

    check out airasia...

    www.airasia.com

they fly from the goldcoast to KL and have sale fares from $149 each way including taxes... you can then fly from KL to CM or CR directly without having to go to bangkok unless you were planning on staying here ( but the way i read it you just wanted to change flights)

flightd from KL to CM are really cheap less than $20 AUD.

you will have to add on the costs of luggage and meals but should still be cheaper than others...

    Cheap Airfares

We flew with Air Asia in July %26amp; the flights were good, have been on their site %26amp; return for 2 people are approx $1500 %26amp; then to CM they are $360 one way (very expensive) for when we need to fly. The cheapest at the moment seem to be Thai Airways Bris to BK. We were hoping to get cheaper as we are on a tight budget this time around.

    Thanks for your reply.

Thanks for your help, my husband %26amp; I were in Thailand in July %26amp; flew Air Asia %26amp; the fares were good. This time around they are very expensive, we have probably left it too late. They are $514 one way from Bris to KL %26amp; then anywhere between $300 %26amp; returning from CM to BK they are $514!!!!!

It is cheaper to go by Thai Airways from Bris to BK.

    Thanks

It sounds like you may have left it too late to grab good fares with AirAsia but here is a handy hint if you book with them in future.

Rather than book a return ticket which will be priced in Aussie dollars, book a one way ticket to KL (AUD) and a one way ticket from KL to the Gold Coast. This home leg will be much cheaper as the flight originates in Malaysia where AirAsia can pick up cheap fuel. Note that this flight will be priced in Malaysian Ringett. Preferably you would pay the flight home with a Wizard Clear Advantage Mastercard as it gives you a very keen exchange rate as well.

It does seem flying from Brisbane to KL is expensive, however, flying Air Asia from KL to Bangkok seems to only be about 4600 bht ROUND trip which is only about $148 AUD per person. Then flying from BKK to CM is quite cheap at than $87 pp round trip. I was using your dates of Nov 22 and Dec 2.

You don%26#39;t want to hear this but AA have had sales for about the last three weeks for flights in November.

I think you have missed the boat. for November.

The only other thing I%26#39;d suggest is looking at Royal Brunei.

They fly Brisbane into Bangkok, with a short stop at Brunei.

They have had good fares lately.

    But, very short notice.

    Caroline.

I just had a look at your dates on Air Asia.

They have flights on your exact dates for about 730A$ return Gold Coast to KL.

Then - yes, about $330 KL - CM return.

Still, that%26#39;s just over $1000A for a return to Chaing Mai.

You could also try KL - BK - CM (you might save some on that way, but more hassel).

  • CM Sight and local Transport

    Hi,

We would like to do these 3 CM sights- just one day or half day activities . We have 5 days but I have only found these things we are interested in, so far.

    1. Doi Suthep Wat Phrat , further to Phuiping Palace, maybe on to Doi Pui hmong Village

    2. Doi Inthanon Park and trek to waterfalls.

    3. handicraft villages Bo sang, Ban Tawan - Sankamphaeng Rd

What is the best way to travel to these areas?

    a. songthaews - I heard exhaust is bad in these trucks, is it easy to get back?

    b. tours - don%26#39;t see much info on these

    c. private driver - more expensive, but perhaps more convenient

    Thanks for any ideas

    CM Sight and local Transport

Unless you are Superman then taking in all 3 of the sites you mentioned in one day would be impossible. Doi Suthep and a trip to one of the local villages wll take you about 2 hours assuming that you plan on climbing up to the Wat and generally having a relaxing day. Thefun part of going to Bo Sang is the shopping aspect where your browse through the many different handycraft shops.

Adding Doi Itheron ( excuse the spelling ) would really mess up a relaxing day. I am sure ou will find some eager taxi driver who will do all 3 for you, but at a price.

Why not go to Ban Tawai that day instead, its on the Hang Dong road and its another village area famous for its handycrafts. 100%26#39;s of shops there.

Like Bo Sang, its about 20 ish minutes outside the city.

    CM Sight and local Transport

We hired a driver for half a day (700B) and went to Doi Suthep and then to the villages. It depends on how long you want to spend at the villages - we did not spend very long at all.

I%26#39;d suggest that the villages alone need at least half a day.

Doi Suthep is another half day.

You can either hire a private guide/driver or you can negotiate when you get there with a driver. We used an aircon cab and paid about 700B for half a day. We knew exactly what we wanted to do - so just told the driver where to take us.

If you want a guide - see the Frequently Asked Question section on the top right hand side of the forum page. There is a link which includes names and contact details for Chiang Mai guides. Just email a couple and ask for prices.

    Caroline.

Sorry Tom, if I left you with the impression we would do this all in one day.

I intended that it would take us 3 days to do these out of the 5 days we have in CM.

I only wanted to know how to travel to do these. But you have given ideas on how to combine if it is more feasible transportation, wise.

Thanks Caroline, I thought private car best, but wondered if we could do it more cheaply with public transport.

We have travelled public transport on holidays many times and quite like that method- puts in in with the locals.

    I so appreciate your ideas.

Personally, I would combine public transport/tuk tuk or songthaew rides and a day with a guide.

For the trip up to Doi Suthep, you can easily jump into the back of a songthaew. Just negotiate a price. They will wait while you look around. If you get a public (share) songthaew - it will be cheaper again. The fumes can be pretty thick in the back of a songthaew going up the mountain.

For the villages you could hire a tuk tuk for half a day - or again. There is a place in the Warorat Market area where public songthaews leave for Bor Sang. Very cheap. But more convenient to have your own driver really and set your own pace.

For a trip further out of town combining a number of different sights - maybe a hill tribe visit as well, I%26#39;d get a guide for the day.

Chiang Mai is not a big place and you will find all of this easy to sort out once you are there.

Check the link on the top right of the forum (FAQ) for names and contacts of guides - if that helps.

    Caroline.

    November trip

Hi we are going to Bandara resort and spa mid Nov for my 50th. We have 2 days shopping in Bangkok first and was wondering what shopping was like at Koh Samui in comparison....Any tips be much appreciated I have a addidition to jeans......

    November trip

    Hi Vicki

Bandara is a great place to relax, beach pool is best at sunset or dawn.Try some toasted banana bread for breakie .Make sure you get a massage down on the beach and enjoy the hawlker food the pineapple on a stick is jucy and fresh mango nice too.The shopping at The Fishing Village 10 min walk away is limited.More shopping at Big Budda and has a couple of good craft shops.Main place to shop in Samui is near the marketplace on Chaweng .Jeans are all the same as tea shirts cheep but not of high quality.I would say better shopping in Bangkok as long as you know where to go.Remember that Bangkok is a big place and unless you take the Sky Train getting around can take for ever.

    Regards

    KIWIKEITH

    November trip

    Hi Vicki

We will be at Bandara at the same time as you. we have tagged Bangkok onto the end of our trip as we believe the shopping is better there. Are you going back to Bangkok after Samui?

If you are on facebook, can I suggest that you join the Bandara fan club?

We are there for 8 days, we stayed last May and really enjoyed it. We might bump into you!

    cheers Denis and Jimmy

Hey thanks for that info....we were orignally going to Bangkok on the way home but dates didn%26#39;t work so now going there first........just wasn%26#39;t sure to shop hard there or wait......hope we catch up for a drink be great...Cheers

Shopping in Bangkok is much better - more goods, more selection and often cheaper.

Thanks Keith for the info..........I can%26#39;t wait.... Yippee. Ps I mean about the trip NOT turning 50.

    Cheers for that....

    Hi again

e will be there from 16/11 for 8 days. We would love to buy you a drink to help you celebrate!

In Bangkok we are staying at the Indra Regent Hotel in Rajaprarop Rd which supposingly is right by the markets..........I hope...

    Restaurants near Adelphi Suites

    Hi there,

My parents a senior couple who are vegetarian are visiting Bangkok for 5 days. Can you recommend any restaurants that have vegetarian food around Adelphi Suites please?

    Thanks a lot!

    Restaurants near Adelphi Suites

Know a great stall in a Silom food court, but I%26#39;m not familiar with the Sukhumvit area.

    cheapeatsbangkok.com/html_eat/…united.html

Vegetarian food is called '; ah-han jay';. The hotel staff may be able to offer some close by recommendations.

    Restaurants near Adelphi Suites

There%26#39;s plenty of indian restaurants around Adelphi Suites which I%26#39;m sure do vegetarian dishes. There%26#39;s also an italian place opposite the hotel which I%26#39;m sure will also have some vegetarian dishes there.

We are vegetarian and will be staying in Sukhumvit too.

Here is a list I compiled for our upcoming trip:

    1) Novotel Lotus - Coco%26#39;s restaurant - Sun night buffet is vegetarian

    2) Kwan Imm Jae ( Chinese vegetarian ) - Sukhumvit Soi 24/1 (BTS Phrom Phong)

    3) Govindas (Italian) - 65/66 Sukhumvit Soi 22

    4) Cabbages and Condoms ( Sukhumvit Soi 12) has vegetarian food

    5) Crepes and Co (18/1, Sukhumvit Soi 12) also has vegetarian options

    6) Any Indian place should have vegetarian dishes and there are plenty in Sukhumvit

    Best regards

If one is a strict vegetarian, I would give Thai restaurants with ';options'; a pass. Although the main ingredients may be vegetable, I would hold the condiments in suspect.

Anyone else confused about new Chiang Mai Province Forum?

    Hi everyone,

Just wondering what others think about the new %26#39;Chiang Mai Province Forum%26#39;. I only noticed it yesterday - mainly because when you search the words %26#39;Chiang Mai Forum%26#39; it now comes up at the top of the list. I accidentally clicked on it twice before realising it was not the usual CM forum.

I guess I%26#39;m wondering if it is really necessary. These are my thoughts...

I think that many (if not most) travelers to Chiang Mai do not just stay in the city. The vast majority use CM as a base and explore the area in and around the city/province. Through day trips, overnight trips, side trips to Chiang Rai, overnight stays at elephant camps, car hire, trips with guides etc etc...

I think the Chiang Mai forum itself addresses all of these questions - it is not just about the city of Chiang Mai. That is the nature of the place.

I%26#39;m wondering if the new CM province forum just confuses the issue - if you want to ask a question and you see these two forums you might think %26#39;well I don%26#39;t just want to stay in the city%26#39;, so you go on to the new forum and ask exactly the same question you could have asked on the existing forum.

I guess I%26#39;m lazy and don%26#39;t want to have to constantly check another forum.

I also think it disadvantages people who want to use the %26#39;search%26#39; function in the fourm search box. Two forums on similar topics - two places to have to search.

At the very least I think the existing forum should be the one at the top of page when you search %26#39;CM forum%26#39;.

What do others think about this? I%26#39;m willing to be convinced otherwise if I am missing something here.

    Caroline.

Anyone else confused about new Chiang Mai Province Forum?

Hi Caroline............. I noticed for the first time yesterday also and like you clicked thinking I would find the regular Chiang Mai Forum page. I guess it will just make it more confusing for people posting.

    Cheers

Anyone else confused about new Chiang Mai Province Forum?

No I agree with all your comments Caroline. Lets just keep it to the one forum. I made the same mistake today.

    Tania

Great idea especially as I am about to post a brief trip report ! thanks for your diligence as the easier the better when you are researching !

Must have only happened very recently. It%26#39;s not hit the .co.uk site yet. TA seem to be on a mission of sub-dividing individual destinations. I presume it will have been done by some quantatitive analysis i.e. a software programme will show so many hits on a particular forum that suggests a separate forum is necessary as happened with Phuket. However, without a qualitative analysis that confirms what Caroline says ';it (the exising forum) is not just about the city of Chiang Mai'; it makes the forums less easy to navigate, information more fragmented, therefore, overall less useful.

Can%26#39;t wait for them to split Khao Lak between ';the beach side of the highway'; and ';the mountain side.'; LOL

Hey Arandora - That is not so funny. On the Penang forum there is a different forum for Batu Ferringhi Beach! One small beach strip! It annoys the hell out of me.....

    C.

That%26#39;s what you get when someone in a ';think tank'; over at TA Towers thinks ';Wouldn%26#39;t it be a good idea if.....?'; without an apprecaition of the reality of their thoughts. Still it spreads the advertising and therefore revenue around, doesn%26#39;t it? Not that I am suggesting for one moment an ulterior motive like making more money!!!!! ;)

I went to Chiangmai Province forum yesterday %26amp; found it empty, so I did my searches in Chiangmai forum.

    Caroline

I also agree the people researching will get comfused.

Who in Tripadvisor decided on this/

    Ed

I suppose with time it will we will all get used to it, but will the IT gurus at TA move all of the ';provincial'; posts currently under Chiang Mai city to the new forum. If they leave the old posts under the city section then searching will get a bit confusing.

Are we ';Destination Experts'; going to be likewise reclassified as city or province experts ?

Hey Mr Cycling - I agree with you. I think the lines are blurred. With CM, it is impossible to divide city from province. People come for both - you can%26#39;t say I am only here for city or for province.

In my opinion we only need one forum - otherwise we are just being given more work to do, having to check two forums for questions.
