Advice on Chatuchak mkt

Hi

will be going to the famous mkt for the first time. being a first timer and knowing how big the place is, any tips on visiting the mkt will be much appreciated. also, any must eat, must see things there? since we may not have time to cover the entire mkt, would like to know what we shouldn%26#39;t miss while we are there. btw, there are 5 of us, 2 adults and 3 kids.

Advice on Chatuchak mkt

My advice would be prepare yourself for oppressive (devoid of fresh breeze) HEAT!

If your kids are with you, keep the cold water handy.

Advice on Chatuchak mkt

Just wander round and enjoy the place - to my mind it is impossible to have a structured/planned visit there.

have heard how hot it is in there....but as we are going there at end of Dec, sure hope it is not that bad but yes, will definitely bring lots of cold drinks, juz in case...

No need to bring cold drinks - it is a market and they will sell you cold drinks.

Hi Octopusmum

You will have a fantastic time there, I am always effected by the heat and was there in September but didn%26#39;t find it too bad, a lot of the stalls have fans (and some aircon units) so I did tend to spend more time loking at the goods in these stalls ;O)

Before we went I bought the Nancy Chandler Bangkok Map, this has a plan of the market and and i think this did help us orientate ourselves before the visit, i didn%26#39;t use the map in the market as we just wandered and stopped where we wanted and carried on walking through if it was too hot, stuffy and smelly but it was reasuring to know how to get back to %26#39;our exit%26#39;.

Regarding what to see it depends on the interests of your group, there are loads of clothes and fashion stalls but we particularly liked the crafts and jewelry available. We did end up walking through the pet section and considering you have kids I would prob give this a miss, I didn%26#39;t see any cruelty but there are puppies, kittens and rabbits in the heat and some looked a bit hot and bothered.

Also as Senjan has said there are drinks available everywhere and they are kept in big tanks with ice so they are cold, we bought a couple of sealed bottles of water for about 10baht which was much better than having to carry them round all day.

Finally a last tip is to ensure you wear mozzie spray as I got bitten, nothing serious but annoying and also take some anti bac hand wipes or gel. With the huge numbers of people going to the market it is a hot bed for germs so just an easy precaution.

Have a great time

My advice would be go early morning to avoid the crowd and the heat. And most of the items offered are repetitive.

Plus, if you do need a drink, there are stalls selling freshly squeezed orange juice :)

As with any crowded venue, it%26#39;s a paradise for pick pockets and purse snatchers. Keep a tight hold on your valuables.

With everyone handling everything, it is a good place to spread germs. Keep your hands clean and away from your face.

Pick a meeting point in case you get separated.

Rest assured that, after you have made you best deal on you r purchase, the next stall will beat it!

The comment about pets in the market looking hot and bothered needs to taken in context. Thailand is a hot country, and pets in my house, or any where else will look and probably feel hot and bothered but they are born to it and live with it just as we do. No doubt pets in Norway or where ever will feel the cold :)

The puppies do look a bit sad and run down. But, then again, so do most of the tourists wandering JJ Market!!

;-)

Hi

If you find something you like at the market buy it then.

If you think about and try and go back to buy it later. you may not find the stall again LOL. I have a favorite store I like to buy shirts from. it always takes me an hr to find it. and I have the address.

all of the stalls are marked and have number%26#39;s but is really confusing.

it is easy to get seperated and lost from group.

always have a few baht coins for the toilets
