Reliable Tailor and Prices

Hi

I am currently in Phuket and heading to Patong for a few days tomorrow. I am looking to get a couple of dresses made (cocktail style) and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good tailor, as well as give me an approximate price guide on a lined silk dress. We will be staying at the northern end at Swiss Palms, so preferably somewhere close to there.

Looking forward to your replies

Sara

Reliable Tailor and Prices

*bump*

Am actually more interested in what the going price would be for this style of dress. Have no idea what the standard price would be.

  • Best Tailor in Karon

Can you recommend a really good tailor to get a man%26#39;s suit made, we visited Thailand before and the suit was awful Koh Samui area 10 years ago so would like someone that has been used with a good reputation?

    Thank you.

Transfers from Laem Chabang Port to Bangkok airport

We are arriving into Laem Chabang Port on 13th March 2010 on Diamond Princess, I have read the comments re transfers to the airport on the forum but they differ. Is there a FREE bus transfer arranged by the ship or should we pay for transfers before we leave Australia? Our travel agent is quoting $62 per person which seems a lot.. As there are 4 of us plus luggage we would need 2 taxis, a mini bus or shared transfer by bus.

    Kind regards, Maureen

Transfers from Laem Chabang Port to Bangkok airport

Surely Princess Cruise line can answer this question? Why not email them? The agent rate per person is higher than the rate for a taxi for 4 people. Unfortunately metered taxis have little space for heavy bags. You could get quotes from http://www.imagelimo.com, or contact oat747@yahoo.com and ask for a quote (different company)

Transfers from Laem Chabang Port to Bangkok airport

You can pre-arrange a mini-bus transfer beforehand for around AU$100.

    Image limo for one offer a 10 seater for a fraction over that;

    http://www.imagelimo.com/rates.htm

    Bangkok Limo advertise a price closer to $70 for a minivan that holds up to 8 people;

    http://www.bangkoklimo.org/

    Here%26#39;s a recent forum thread on the topic as well;

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293916-i3687-k259…

AU$62/pax is an insane amount of money. You should be able to get a transer for all four of you for the same price or less. A taxi, depending upon how well you bargain, should cost you between 1000 and 2000THB. Their won%26#39;t be room for a lot of luggage but I assume you can leave most of it on the ship. If you have any problems, contact me directly and I can help you find a transfer via mini van for much, much less than AUS$240.

Hi I am doing the same cruise in April. i was in Thailand in January this year and went down to the same area for AU$50 in a taxi

Hope you have a great time

Thankyou for the info. I%26#39;m a bit concerned as there are 4 of us plus luggage, so we will need a van %26amp; I don%26#39;t know if there would be any at the port (maybe only taxis) As I haven%26#39;t been to the port B4 it%26#39;s a bit hard to know which way to go, (ie. book or hope there will be vans waiting) I don%26#39;t want to book %26amp; pay for a van on line, in case they don%26#39;t turn up on the day %26amp; I%26#39;m out of pocket %26amp; no transfer.

We used to get transfers in Bali prepaid through travel agent until we found a much cheaper option at airport to pay for a taxi/s when we got there., but I presume that would be different to a cruise port.

    Kind regards, Maureen.

Have you seen the Aussie Embassy%26#39;s ';do not travel'; advisory for the southern region?

    smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/…Thailand

';We strongly advise you not to travel at this time to the southern provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla or overland to and from the Malaysian border through these provinces due to high levels of ongoing violence in these regions, including terrorist attacks and bombings resulting in deaths and injuries on an almost daily basis. • Quiet Beautiful Krabi

I wanted to write a review of Tha Lane Bay Villas but because they are a one off place they don%26#39;t fit the criteria but I really feel they do such a wonderful job in terms of service and the place is so beautiful some of your readers might like to know about it. I have stayed at Thalanebay twice, we went back this year because we loved it so much. You have to make a money transfer prior to the stay but everything is totally above board although I have to say I felt anxious about it the first time. Mon and Rik who manage the place are such sweeties and do everything they can to ensure you have the best holiday. It is like staying in a fully serviced private hotel with a view to die for. The pool is beautiful, clean and set against the backdrop that launched a million photographs from my gang! It over looks the sea and islands but isn%26#39;t on a beach but you can get to beaches easily enough by taxi. Mon and Rik will do, find and arrange anything you want, they will be your guides, your cooks, your child-minders and your friends. We treated them with great respect and affection but we could see that some people might take advantage of their kindness, generosity and willingness, it was something we never did.

Mon is a fabulous cook and we mostly ate in in the evenings, we often spent days at the villa because it is so lovely. It is isolated and costs about 2400 Baht to hire a taxi to take you out and about for the day and a bit more for a longtail boat which can sometimes take you to the islands from the villa if the tides are right or from the local pier a couple of miles away. The transport if you want to go places is a significant add on but between 8 it wasn%26#39;t so bad.

We had one holiday with our friends all in our 50%26#39;s and another holiday with our kids and their friends who are in their 20%26#39;s, we all loved it and often wish ourselves back there! Our kids went off for a couple of nights in Phi Phi and although they had a fun time where it was a bit livelier they were really glad to get back to Tha lane.

I can not recommend the place highly enough, we loved it but it might not be everyones cup of tea as it is quiet and remote. We loved the peace of the place and if we fancied a bit of fun we all piled in a taxi and had a day or a night in Ao Nang or Krabi or on the islands.

The place is every bit as lovely as it looks in the pictures if not better and Rik and Mon make it a total joy. I feel I have been so spoiled by the experience I%26#39;m not sure I want to go anywhere else.

Where can I buy pandora charms have you seen them anywhere?

Hi, yes I know there have previously been postings relating to this subject, yet there has not yet been any definitive locations on where to purchase.

I am only after the little silver charms and braclets, fake ok to.

Please if you have come accross these can you let me know where I can purchase as I would like to buy quite a few.

Also would it be worth my while to get a local guide who may know the factories so I can buy there.

Thanks in advance to all replies.

Where can I buy pandora charms have you seen them anywhere?

Although I may not have the most discerning eye when it comes to such things, I believe there is stuff very similar to this all over Sampeng, Chinatown.

Sampeng is well known to any Bangkok taxi driver.

Where can I buy pandora charms have you seen them anywhere?

    thank you.

Is there a local guide who may be able to assist me in purchasing these charms, bracelet etc from a supplier. Can anyone reccommend a trustworthy guide.

    thanks

For the most part, local suppliers are places like Sampeng. Although some will sell by piece, most prefer wholesale lots. Few retailers deal ';factory direct';.

Most factory operators wouldn%26#39;t let anyone within a kilometer of their operation, let alone a foreigner. And, most local guides will only be familiar with the kind of factories that pay them to bring foreigners.

Here is something you could check out. It will have factories that are soliciting business:

    http://www.hellothai.com/eng/fd01e.htm

There is also the Thai Embassy. Beyond visas, most embassies are little more than business facilitators. I know that the Los Angeles embassy has a huge business section. You might check if you have one nearby.

I work for a charm bead producer and can tell you that what you are asking is not possible. Do you really think a producer would be interested in selling 10 charm beads when they produce 10,000 per day?

Hey i bought some Pandora charms at MBK. Im not sure if they are real or not as they are not stamped...however the lady told us that they come from the Pandora factory but that they cannot be stamped (stolen?! Don’t know haha) however they really were IDENTICAL to some real ones my sisters and i have. They havent faded or tarnished ín 9 months so who knows...

Anyway i got them from a lady down the end of MBK, i think it was level 2. Its the level where you can access Pathumwan from the second level lobby. She is not openly displaying them but if you ask for them she will discretely bring them out. She was the second one on the right...80-300 baht per charm... good luck!

I can confidently tell you that they can%26#39;t be real at that price. They%26#39;re probably copies from China.

    Obviously!

Pandora charms are made under licence in Thailand ....I have been to the factory in Chiang Mai and they were definately the real thing

yes the lady told us they were from chiang mai too. Obviously i am not vouching for real charms, just saying they were good quality...

KP with a 2 year old

    Hi,

Does anyone know if this is a suitalble place to take a young child? We weren%26#39;t going to go for a full moon party, but is it okay for children at other times of the month?

Also, does anyone know where on the island has the best snorkelling?

    Thanks

KP with a 2 year old

We took our then 19month old daughter last year to KPG and she loved it , I did however take those milton tablets with me to wash her cups and bottles(as she was still having a bottle at night) and she was not ill once. We stayed up in thong nai pan noi and she loved it, we went on plenty of longtail boat rides around the island and just popped a life vest on her, we also had a toddler back pack carrier for trekking up to waterfalls etc and I cant stress enough how fab it was. So go have fun..

KP with a 2 year old

i would have no hesitation taking a 2 year old to any where in thailand ,we are much travelled in asia and will be taking our baby long before he is 2.

  • Current Weather (sorry!!)

I know this is one of the most frequently asked questions on this forum, so apologies for asking again... we arrive in Krabi (Railay) on Sunday and if the forecasts I%26#39;ve seen are to be believed, it%26#39;s not looking so good weatherwise for us. Can someone in Krabi please let me know what the current weather is like - is it just short showers, or constant rain? Or does anyone know of a relatively reliable weather forecast site(s) for Krabi?

    Thanks in advance!

    Current Weather (sorry!!)

We haven%26#39;t had rain for about a week - it has been hot and sunny.

I%26#39;m playing tennis this arvo, so it will probably chuck it down!!!

Jungle Flight or Flight of the Gibbon?

    Hi,

Any advice to which one is the better day out,

Flight of the Gibbon is 2,300( regular time pick up), or 2,800 for early pick up,

Jungle Flight is 2,200 or 2,800 ,( interesting that they used to be cheaper , but not anymore)

I realise I could probably get cheaper if I booked when there, but I%26#39;m keen to do it on a specific day that we are there, so am prepared to pay a bit extra to lock it in.

Any advice to which may be the better one would be appreciated

Jungle Flight or Flight of the Gibbon?

Since Jungle Flight is new, I doubt many have been to both yet. Why don%26#39;t you try it and let us know how it is?

    Thom

Jungle Flight or Flight of the Gibbon?

I am not sure why they boosted the price at The Jungle Flight. Seems a little crazy in a slow market but they did just open their newest longest zip line and maybe this made the difference. I%26#39;m sure you can get a better price if you send them an E Mail. If not post it here.

    Hi!

if you really interesting want to joint for the zipline?I can only help you with';Flight of the gibbon';for early pick up from 2,800 to 2,080.again,for early pick up at';Flight of the gibbon';as mention only.

    is it interesting?.......

Flight of the Gibbon was 3 hours late picking us up. On top of it we did not get a refund to late pick up from regular pick up. They rushed us through the whole event in 40 minutes, I barely remember the scenery. This was suppose to be a 2.5 - 3 hour activity. If I went again I would personally try Jungle Flight hoping for some better serive. I was just there in April, hopefully they pulled up their panties.

    hi

I think that you got a bit confused about Jungle Flight price now.

I went there,in fact they have two packages now. one is 2,200,that was the first package with 22 platforms.that%26#39;s the normal one.

The 2,800 one is the new package, with 34 platforms, and 4 of the longest cables, one of them is 300m and very high.4 abseils, 570m canopy walk....one extra picnic snack as well, sweet and nice I would say... food was very good, nice vegetables....

34 platforms! I would go with that tour!

    Hey guys

DON%26#39;T USE JUNGLE FLIGHT!! crap safety procedures. they abseiled you between platforms and try to give you a scare by dropping you a little bit, but they dropped me all the way. i broke my ankle in thailand!! the company won%26#39;t pay my costs and had no first aid kit or safety plan, i had to direct them to cut wood for a splint and make a stretcher! for the whole story and photos see my blog at http://dontdojungleflight.blogspot.com/.

be warned! ive done ziplining in samui so love it but use the main company %26#39;flight of the gibbons%26#39;which was set up by a New zealand crew..

  • Centara Grand Resort - club extra's ??

We are thinking of staying here with an offer through our travel company. I am aware of a Club upgrade , but wanted to check what alcohol is included if anyone knows ?

Are the cocktails alcoholic or just fruit one%26#39;s ?

Does the offer include local beers and spirits ?

    Many thanks

    Centara Grand Resort - club extra's ??

It doesn%26#39;t include cocktails and the only alcohol served is the session starting around 6ish and you get heiniken, Singh, vodka or rum.

    Centara Grand Resort - club extra's ??

    OK thanks thats very helpful

We are also asking the same question - did you take the %26#39;Club%26#39; option? Was it worth it?

    Did you like the resort?

Unable to help you as havn%26#39;t travelled yet !!

We where thinking if going due to a special offer but it was for 8 nights, decided against it as we like to stay at a few different places !

Food and drink can be obtained very cheaply rather than staying in hotel, plenty of choice in Chaweng.

    Hi!

There are quite a few reviewers who specifically mention the club room extras - they include fionahendry, atcer28, suzyglasgow and Janbru-8 - who said that there was Australian red wine and French sparkling wine included.

I like a decent wine but have read that wine%26#39;s expensive on Koh Samui so if youu%26#39;re a wine drinker it may be an option. Why don%26#39;t you read all the reivews then try PM%26#39;ing some of those who mention the club rooms to ask them exactly what%26#39;s included?

Thanks for response - may see you there! We will be there in Dec

Oh! When in December are you going? We go to Bangkok for a couple of days first then heading to the centara for 2 weeks - leave on 24th December.

We are going to Bangkok first too - where are you staying? I have heard Siam#Siam is great! Will be in Koh Samui until 26 Dec

We are also gojing to Bangkok first - where are you staying? I have heard good things about Siam@Siam. We will be in Koh Samui until 26 Dec

    Kerri - I%26#39;ll pm you,

    fractional ownership

has anyone bought into a fractional ownership in Phuket? been looking on net at details of villas, is it worth doing and what sort of costs involved? any info on this subject

    fractional ownership

I think this is much the same as the old timeshare ownership.

    fractional ownership

yeah thats what we thought, but reading articals seems different as you actually own part property, look up on siamrealestate.com/info/fractional-ownership and also www.thailand-fractional-ownership.com would like feedback off thoughts on this, maybe still the same as timeshare? thanks

This %26#39;term%26#39; is appearing now in Thailand quite a lot - not my type of thing at all so I am no hope there : )

When talking property in Phuket is difficult as property is so hugely expensive compared with elsewhere in Thailand.

However, before going along with any sort of Fractional Ownership / Tiem Share or whatever sort of deal I believe it is a help to compare with whyat property does costs to own.

Although not Phuket, keep at the back of your mind that in popular condominium / vacation apartment areas ( such as Jomtien Beach ) in Thailand a decent hotel-room size studio apartment in condo block with pool etc costs to %26#39;buy%26#39; around THB 1- 1.2m about US$ 31-37k , AU$ 34 - 40k, GBP 18-22k - and you own that to use or whatever.

Maintenance charges are minimal, think THB 3,500-6,000 per year covering insurance, security, swimming pool and any other facilities, common areas etc etc.

Legal fees are minimal ( very low ), even as a Foreigner the legal side is quite clear and simple.

I have friends from Canada, US and Europe who have all bought and all have said it was a %26#39;breeze%26#39; compared with buying in their home countries.

A 2 bedroom bungalow ( different laws apply here as you cannot own the land - but this is another whole long story but is still %26#39;do-able%26#39; for those looking at holiday and / or retirement home ) think double those amounts above but again, that would be perhaps Jomtien Cha Am, Hua Hin areas.

It comes down to whether you are hoping for a return on investment, looking to have your own holiday place or whatever.

Keep figures like that in mind and at least it is a base-point to get some bearings whern they start talking money.

It at least gives you a perspective when figures are quoted.

dragonc - that%26#39;s what I thought, I had to look at Wikipedia to ind what it really meant but the mentioned of it%26#39;s not the same as time share and then went on about owning a share in the deeds to a property - at that point I clicked away, not the same but same same but different :) LOL

Mossy, I think it comes down to what you are after.

I would not go down anything that shares with others or some scheme like that. But that is me.

In Thailand you have to be very careful as there are lots of restrictions about foreign ownership of property. Fractional ownership sounds like it may be fraught with legal difficulties here. We only hear about it in Phuket, no where else in Thailand that I know of.

Hi, please do not look at costs involved first.

Firstly evaluate your present and foreseeable lifestyle. Then, familiarise with geographical location of the whole of Phuket.

Familiarise with the unit of measurement used in Thailand for area, though many have converted to SI units.

As the name suggests, own property on the desired period of time for your holiday rather than buy the unit and use only a few times in a year.

In Phuket, if I still remember, David Lloyd was the first to conceptualise this.

Besides the property, other throw ins(e.g. yacht, airport transfer, concierge etc. are available.

    Very good point made by Dragonc ;

..and also I too have only heard of this being promoted in Phuket, but again same goes with the time-share which is so big there.

With just one requirement issue about the % of condominiums in a developemnt available for foreign ownership that is the only point for a foreigner buying a condo, otherwise it%26#39;s a breeze and 100% clear, you get full ownsership papers etc etc and there are no %26#39;grey areas%26#39; to worry about.

ok thanks for the info everyone, sheds a bit of light on it all now, but if anyone has actually bought like this please let us know how it went thanks all

    ';With just one requirement issue about the % of condominiums in a developemnt available for foreign ownership that is the only point for a foreigner buying a condo, otherwise it%26#39;s a breeze and 100% clear, you get full ownsership papers etc etc and there are no %26#39;grey areas%26#39; to worry about.';

I would not be too sure about the gray areas. No more than 49% of the total units of any condo may be foreign owned - sounds straightforward, but who actually is the legal owner under Thai law of the unit you%26#39;re buying %26#39;fractual%26#39; ownership in. I think you would need expert legal advice from a property lawyer, and not one based in Phuket who might have vested interests.

I'm confused: Where to stay in Bangkok?

    Hi there,

Me and my significant other will be arriving in Bangkok for 3 nights from 11/11 to 14/11 in 2009.

It%26#39;s an old question posted on these forums, but I%26#39;ve read them and now I%26#39;m all confused!

We would ideally like to find a hotel that is situated close to attractions i.e. 15min bus ride, close to night markets (walking distance), shopping malls (walking distance), good authentic thai cuisine etc

Someone I know is suggesting Sukhumvit, Silom and Siam Square. Can anyone confirm this, or suggest an alternative location where it%26#39;s all at?

And please don%26#39;t forget to suggest a hotel in the area too.

Many thanks in advance, I really appreciate it.

I'm confused: Where to stay in Bangkok?

Yes to those locations as you need to be near the skytrain for ease in getting around. With the trafic there a bus would not be a good option. I have stayed in Majestic Grande and atm they have a special on pay 2 nights stay 3. But that is only one of so many hotels,

I'm confused: Where to stay in Bangkok?

The main attractions (Grand Palace etc) are not in the same area as the main shopping centers, night markets, etc. Bt most visitors choose to stay around Sulhumvit, Silom, Siam, Ploenchit area as the transport is good, the shops and markets are closeby, and access to the real tourist sites is easy using the skytrain and river express boats.

    Thank you.

So what hotel/s would you recommend for that particular area you have suggested, in terms of good value and high accommodation standards?

    Thanks

sukhumvit would be ideal..but depends hw $$$$ you want to pay......

orelse at MBK....which is 1 of the main shopping complexes..in Siam there is a wonderful, very nice hotel above called.

    Pathumwan Princess

    close to everything etc aswell

il actually be in thailand with 6 friends during your stay..can email me,and can exchange more details or even catch up

    Hi Zee,

I have stayed in lower Sukumvit a couple of times and really like the area, it has a real buzz to the area, close to to a sky train station and some great places to eat and drink.

I really loved staying at the The Landmark Hotel so if it is in your price rage check out all the reviews on it.

A bit cheaper is the Belaire Princess I have researched this one and am going to be staying there with my boyfriend in Sept.

Other hotels I have looked at are Dream, Pathumwan Princess(attached to MBK)and Park Plaza all look good on reviews and offer something different in location so see if one suits.

I think overall it is hard to cover all your requirements but with the sky train and boats you can navigate round the city really easily and forget the busy traffic! that way transport is part of the holiday experience.

    Enjoy the search

    Cheers Jazz :O)

    Zee,

For a first time there you can beat the www.sheratongrandesukhumvit.com. You can walk onto the Sky Train platform from the lobby of the hotel. Breakfast is really good. Pool is adequate. Not over the top. Rooms are very nice.

Thai cuisine can be had all over. I think even Basil in the Sheraton Grande is very good but we didn%26#39;t eat there this last time.

I%26#39;ve stayed all over Bangkok..Silom, Ploenchit, Sukhumvit..I think for you this Sheraton would be ideal.

If you%26#39;d like some more advice give us your budget, spot on. It really makes a difference and will help us narrow down the choices.

    Hi

I have just returned from Bangkok this week and i stayed at The Courtyard by Marriott. The hotel itself is only a couple of years old and it was lovely. I booked through Trailfinders and paid about £70 for b%26amp;b per night but that was for a triple so it might be cheaper for you. It was only about 5 min walk to one big mall and the night markets and other malls are only just over a pound in a taxi(even when roads are busy).

The food in the hotel was very very nice and on a lunch time they have a special on each day for less then £3 each.

Hope this helps, just let me know if you want anymore info.

    Cheers

    Thanks guys and girls..

Well it would be on our way back from Pattaya. We are kind of splashing out in Pattaya, so when we get to Bangkok we might have already blown our budget away!

suppose you only live once but hey!

Coming back to Bangkok.. well I have looked at a place to some detail called the Sasha Hotel Uno..

    http://www.hotel-uno.com/

I did a search on agodo.com and it quoted me at £35 per night for b%26amp;b. It gets good ratings on this website and on Sukhumvit 19.

Is that where I need to be??

Imo the location is fine. I looked at the website.

How about the Pathumwan Princess..next to MBK shopping mall, not too far from the night market, go to the 6th floor for authentic thai food.

    Siam@Siam is another good choice.

Which sunset dinner cruise would you choose please?

I just wanted to book up one of these to celebrate a birthday, anniversary and engagment all in one!

    Any tips greatly appreciated.

I have seen many different boats. Wooden ones that look beautiful and modern ones.

Which sunset dinner cruise would you choose please?

I am looking at doing a Manohra luxury cruise (sunset dinner) have any of you done this?

Which sunset dinner cruise would you choose please?

Haven%26#39;t done Manohra, however we were on Loy Nava in January and absolutely loved it! The ambience was fantastic, very authentic and intimate. The food was some of the best we had in Thailand. We went on the 6pm cruise ( there are 2, one at 6 and one at 8pm) . It%26#39;s on an antique teakwood rice barge. We would definately do it again.. and again.. and again, lol. :)

    www.loynava.com

I%26#39;ve tried them all and every one of them can be recommended. However, for me, Loy Nava gets the nod of approval over its rivals.

    Hi,

We did the Grand Pearl in December and loved it. It was the last night of our honeymoon (last night in Bangkok before flying home) and we couldn%26#39;t have ended our trip any better. The food was superb, the entertainment was fantastic. It was romantic and wonderful, definitely one of my favourite Thailand memories!

I just love the Loy Nava cruise :) http://www.loynava.com

I intend to take one of these cruises on our next visit to Bangkok. My only concern is if is suitable for people who suffer from motion/sea sickness? Are there swaying movements while on board? I had been on a moving ferry for 15 minutes onboard and didnt feel sick.

    Please advise. Thank you

Very little sensation of that kind of motion.

    Hi

we were in bangkok 3 weeks ago and we did the La Noya the 8pm cruise

    was really good

  • HELP - Hotels at reasonable prices

Guys, i%26#39;ll be going to Phuket from 28th Dec -30th Dec. Tried surfing many of the more affordable hotels but its all fully taken up.

Actually i%26#39;ve been searching around Kata beach area because i%26#39;ve heard Patong beach is a ';red light district'; area??

Any other beachs/hotels that i can look into that offers sea spports?

    Please guide

HELP - Hotels at reasonable prices

hi try southern fried rice karon, we are ther for two weeks befor moving onto our net destination it a great place to stay, be quick as the whole area will be fully booked!

HELP - Hotels at reasonable prices

    Hi,

What%26#39;s your budget more or less per evening?

Patong has become a family oriented locale WITH a red light district. Mostly Patong is shopping and eating and regular massage. At night, pretty young girls replace the regular massage ladies on the street and offer another sort of massage, but apart from Bangla Rd, it%26#39;s not overt.

Everywhere is more expensive on those dates. Sawadee.com has a good list of hotels you can sort by price:

    http://www.sawadee.com/hotels/phuket.html

    or try this:

    travellerspoint.com/budget-accommodation-en-…

It totally helped! Booked Surin Sabai Condominium for 3 nights at THB 7500 per twin sharing room.

Now i%26#39;m trying to find out what%26#39;s the down side for them offering so good prices.. :P

  • under eye concealer
  • costs in Karon beach area

could anyone please advise as to the following

    1. costs of daily lounger/umbrella hire on Karon beach

    2. is it worth getting your own transport and driver for daily personal tours, some idea of costs/recommendations

    3. costs of tuks to kata beach

    thank you

    DRACSS

    costs in Karon beach area

    1. 100Bt

    2. Drivers are about 200 Bt per hour. Many tours offer free transfer, and if you are doing a boat tour (eg Phanga Nga, Phi Phi) you wont need transport.

    3. 100Bt

    costs in Karon beach area

    Thank you

    dracss

I found the tuk tuk drivers hard to bargain with in Karon (compared to Patong). It%26#39;s like they got together and decided on a minimum price for trips and wouldn%26#39;t budge. The best I could get to Kata was 200 baht each way, and that was with the driver we booked to take us from the airport, the Karon drivers wanted more. For a four hour shopping trip, 800 baht, and that was stopping at all the voucher/kick back places, so I guess 200 baht per hour is about right. All day tours (as I%26#39;ve seen quoted on this forum) range from as little as 500 baht to as much as 1500 baht.

    Hi

I have just spoken to our local beach vendor on Karon Beach and they charge 200 baht per day for 2 sun loungers under 1 umbrella.

Also for a drive I highly recommend Khun Daj. He can be contacted via kanidaj@hotmail.com or telephone # 0862749195.

Otherwise a tuk tuk from mid to the southern end of Karon to the southern end of Kata Beach costs between 200 to 250 baht. If you bargain nicely you will get one for 200 baht.

    Hope this helps you.

    Chantal

Also for a drive I highly recommend Khun Daj. He can be contacted via kanidaj@hotmail.com or telephone # 0862749195.

    Does he do airport transfer?

Would he be able to take 6 paxs at which price range?

Lone Traveller on a Short Stay - Any Tour Guide Suggestions?

    Hello,

I%26#39;m a lone traveller who%26#39;ll be having a few days in Bangkok en route to New Zealand. I really want to make the most of my time, and it%26#39;s been suggested that a tour guide for the day can be a really good way of seeing the sights and learning how to negotiate the city. Does anybody know any tour guides that they would recommened? Also, any advice for a lone traveler in Bangkok welcome!

    Thanks in advance!

Has anyone flown China Airlines recently?

I am traveling on China Airlines for the first time %26amp; am wondering what to expect. I am not asking about flight record but want to know about the flight in general, seating, food, etc.

Has anyone flown China Airlines recently?

Make sure the plane has personal tv%26#39;s, our flight didnt when it should have, what a long boring flight. Never again.

    Cessnock

Has anyone flown China Airlines recently?

    Hi,

Thank you for your response. Was the plane dirty? How was the food? I am traveling economy. Were you comfortable? If you could give me any further help, I would appreciate it. I know that my ticket is already purchased but I would just like to know what I%26#39;m in for.

Not sure why you%26#39;d wonder if the plane was ';dirty';? They%26#39;re a very professional airline, the F/A%26#39;s are friendly, although I didn%26#39;t fly in economy.

    There%26#39;s a long string of reviews here;

    http://www.airlinequality.com/Forum/china.htm

I have flown them between the States and Taiwan, as well as inter-Asia. They are a good carrier. We had AVODs on the transpacific flights. And the food was ... well airline food ;-)

Don%26#39;t confuse reviews of Air China with China Airlines. Air China from mainland China is much more lack luster and could use a bit a sprucing up in the customer service department.

    Hi,

I%26#39;ve flown China Air (CI) many times, both intra-Asia regional flights as well as long haul USA-Asia flights..

I%26#39;ve always found them to be a overall very good carrier.. Food is fine-- to a point in economy food is food, gourmet it%26#39;s not, but you won%26#39;t go hungry either.. Drinks are free and free flowing..

I personally prefer their newer A340%26#39;s and A330 which have seat-back AVOD with the retractable controller built into the armrest. I like this system over the touch screen system as I always seem to get seated in front of someone who believes that the screen somehow operates better/fast by pressing harder and more frequently. As I recall only their B744%26#39;s that are scheduled on TPE-LAX services are retro-fitted with AVOD, the others do not have it yet.

The A340%26#39;s have a slide-forward type seat-- that is that the seat bottom slides forward just bit when you recline.. the seat back still reclines, but the combination of the slide-forward with recline makes it feel like I%26#39;m being ';bucketed'; and I sleep better like this.. The seats also have a manual foot rest that%26#39;s attached to the seat bottom in front of you.. You can lower it and rest your feet on it if you like.

The only thing that I dislike about CI is that TPE isn%26#39;t the best airport for connections when compared to ICN, SIN and others in the region, but this isn%26#39;t something that is within CI%26#39;s control per se.. The other thing that *may* be an issue for those whom mileage accrual is important, is that CI is not yet a member of any of the 3 major alliances (OneW, StarA or SkyT).. Therefore miles earned on CI currently have limited use beyond CI itself.

    Travel Safe,

China Airlines flights can be credited to the Delta Skymiles program. They don%26#39;t count towards elite status, but do count for all other aspects. Not sure if they are tied in with any other FF programs.

I%26#39;ve just watched episode 2. some of the best comedy i%26#39;ve seen in years.

however on a more serious note.

The naivity and immuturity strikes me straight away with a lot of the people in this program.

The young lady being tried for cannabis possession looks in her late teens, 19/20 maybe, but certainly comes over very naive and immature. As does her boyfriend and her family when she reunites with them at the airport.

I%26#39;m not saying you have to know every single law in a particular country, but if you are unaware that nearly every country in Asia have severe penalties in regards to drugs whether it be cannabis or herion then you shouldn%26#39;t be allowed to travel.

Todays 18-30 age group of young single/couple travellers, particularly those that are drawn to beach parties, entertainment areas, just don%26#39;t seem to have a clue about travelling in foreign countries. Why is there a need to get blind drunk, stoned or even spaced out to enjoy oneself. Is life for these people that depressing, boring, mundane and tedious.

Her familiy, in particular her mother is just as much to blame here as well. Parental responsibility for educating your children in the rights and wrongs of this world is a duty of any parent. To dismiss the incident and not to chastise her daughter or even her boyfriend is incredulous. ';Nobody to blame';, she says. The boyfriend, the girl and her family need to take responsibility for their actions in regards to this but fail to do so. There needs to be consequences even if it%26#39;s just a bollicking from your parents. This is the most disappointing aspect of this part of the program.

You reap what you sow i guess.

    bkk3

i try and do nothing ';wrong'; as to avoid the law in all the countries that i visit. i remember being in Singapore, when i was young, and reading about a girl being hanged for pot...i am very careful in another country doing ANYTHING...at all.. when they take you into custody, even for something that you didn%26#39;t do...who knows or cares...meaning ';who are you going to call'; if they give you a chance to call someone..keep having fun and keep your nose clean

    There%26#39;s a JJ in Koh Samui too...from the Drummond site%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

Swiss couple flee jet ski operator in terror - Chaweng

A Swiss couple were reported to have fled Koh Samui yesterday after telling local Embassy officials that they that the couple had been threatened with a beating and rape if they failed to pay 65,000 baht (2000 Swiss francs).

A source close to the Swiss Embassy said the couple were escorted to the airport by a consular representative and safely boarded a 3pm flight from Koh Samui to Bangkok after the threats by an operator on Chaweng Beach. “The woman was visibly shaking in the departure area.”

Officially the Swiss Embassy Consular department said they could not comment on individal cases and would neither confirm or deny the report. The couple could not be contacted to verify the report.

According to one Consular source, from data gathered together by foreign consular representatives between December and April this year there were in the region of 150 cases of tourists having to pay for damaged jet skis on Koh Samui, approximately one a day.

The controversial documentary series ’Big Trouble in Thailand’ is expected to highlight a jet ski problem in Chaweng in a later programme in the series.

Tourist police join in the rescue when a plane crashes in Koh Samui. Drug smuggler Marcus Hilton, awaiting sentencing in Pattaya Prison, faces the death penalty or life imprisonment.

But the Andrew Drummond site says Episode 3 is being re-edited to include the arrest at Bangkok airport last tuesday of the Australian conman Lance Shaw!

    Fire Ants in Thailand?

Hi, my wife and I are planning a trip to Thailand next year, but she is extremely allergic to fire ants--I am referring to the ones we have in the southeast United States. I realize Thailand must have many many kinds of ants, but does anyone know if they have those red ';fire ants'; that cause the very painful stings?

  • Single Traveller Full Moon Party Dec 2

I am going to Thailand for a couple of weeks in Nov and will be travelling by myself (single female, mid to late 20s). I will being spending the first part of my holiday doing an Intrepid trip but have been reading about the Full Moon Party and was wondering if it was worth making the trip from Bangkok for and whether it would be safe to head to it on my own?

    Thanks KJ

Single Traveller Full Moon Party Dec 2

Hi, I am arriving from the UK on 29th Nov to start my travels on my own too and am due to stay in Bangkok for a few days then head off somewhere else. I am 27, I think it%26#39;s safe as most people will be in the same situation as us so no worries. I was thinking about heading to Ko Tao first as I%26#39;ve read a lot of bad things about the full moon parties lately but who knows, my plans will probably change once i%26#39;m there.

    jetstar sale fares

    Hi all,

Just booked a flight for may with jetstar for $715 AD. Sale ends midnight tuesday.

    jetstar sale fares

Still more than double an AirAsian flight to Phuket. Yet another great reason to live on the Gold Coast.

    jetstar sale fares

hi i have booked return flights with jetstar including tax, meal and inflight entertainment for $513.00 aud

    a bargain with jetstar!!!!!!!!!

Glad you think so - I prefer AirAsia and so does my hip pocket.

I have never been able to get a cheap fare out of Jetstar..Someone was saying that because i am in Brisbane and would have to get a connecting flight to Syd or Mel makes it more expensive.

Would love to hear if any QLD%26#39;ers have been lucky with them.

Makes it even more expensive when you%26#39;re departing from Townsville.

Somnomna, I haven%26#39;t seen a Jetstar flight worth considering since I grabbed one of their inaugural Starclass seats for BNE-MEL-BKK-MEL-BNE. The cost wasn%26#39;t far shy of 2k and the product, abominable!

It%26#39;s good in a way that even the Cairns - Singapore flights are usually overpriced, it saves me having to ever consider them again.

Personally I find it extremely hard to go past an XL seat on AAX out of OOL.

Christmas day alone in Ao Nang, Krabi - Advice??

I would have been travelling for about a month by the time it%26#39;s christmas day and I am looking to head to Krabi where I will meet my girlfriend and my brother and his girlfriend on boxing day. I%26#39;d just like to hear what I can expect from christmas day alone in Ao Nang Krabi as it%26#39;s my first time travelling and i will be alone until boxing day.

Christmas day alone in Ao Nang, Krabi - Advice??

Christmas is wonderful in Krabi,The streets are busy and tourists from all corners of the globe are about. The main drag in Aonang runs parallel to the beach so the back drop is ever present.Thru out the evening ceremonial laterns are released creating a sea of light resembling orange jelly fish in the sky.Krabi is more family and backpacker friendly than say Samui or Phuket.I loved it.Hope this helps.

Christmas day alone in Ao Nang, Krabi - Advice??

I wonder if any of you know that, before Ao Nang was developed, it had a pink beach? The colour was a result of the crushed shells that produced the beach. At that time the only building was a small wooden hotel. Once the developers started, the beach was destroyed. Big shame. Anyway, enjoy your Christmas!

Once upon a time New York was a squalor and London was gas lit..Its the reasponsiblity of the local authorities to make sure appropriate developement is erected,Or do Thais blame tourists for inapproprite developement?..But they like the $$$$.

hi, ill be arriving in krabi on christmas day this year, and looking to find a nice cheap place to spend the night on a beach. where would be good for a 30 year old solo traveller? is accommodation easy to find? thx

Hi, I have found a place called Ao Nang Friendly Bungalows which seems ok. It%26#39;s about a 5 - 10 minute walk from the beach and closer to shops etc apparently. This is where i%26#39;m thinking of staying.

    which island

    Hi

My husband and I hope to go to Thailand on January. Suggestions please which island for 50 years olds - don%26#39;t want to be the oldest kids on the block

    which island

What kind of island are you looking for?

Close to BKK? water activities like norkelling nd divinf? jetskis? remote and quiet? or places to walk around etc.

For close to BKK, there is Koh Samet.

If i want remote. I go to koh Kood or Koh Wai in Trat

If I have time and want some fun I head down to Phuket/Krabi

If I have time and want to be snorkelling etc. Koh Lanta, Koh Hai in Trang

    which island

For a relaxing break in comfort Id probably recommend The Kantaray Bay Hotel and you can use facilities and beach at Cape Panwa Hotel in Phuket.

Ao Nang in Krabi is a good base if you want to explore the surrounding area. From Ao Nang you can get a longtail boat to nearby Railay which has a beautiful beach and amazing scenery. You can also visit nearby Islands such as Koh Lanta, or do a 5 island tour which includes Poda/Chicken Island, there are also boats to Koh Phi Phi if you really wanted to go there.

My fav is Koh Lipe you used to be able to get a boat from here to Langkawi in Malaysia but I dont know if it is still operating.

    Enjoy

have a look at mae nam resort ,mae nam beach, koh samui..

    Katey:

I%26#39;ve only been to Phuket and Ko Samui, as far as Thai islands go, but as a 50 year old, I definitely preferred Ko Samui and am returning in 2010.

    Broder

    Hi,

Why worry about being the oldest kids on the block. Speaking as a 50 + there are many nice places to visit. I have been to Koh Samui, Koh Tao and the one in between the two is a nice place. Now, I prefer Koh Phi Phi desoite the fact it has become quite touristy. What exactly what do you want from an island ?

If you go to Koi Samui then its near Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, you could island hop a bit then. Flights from Bangkok are about 1hr 30mins ish.

I like Koh Samui as there is plenty of things to do, however I like Phi Phi too as it was quiet and relaxing there for us.

Phuket is quite noisy from my experience, but again a large place with plenty to do.

thank you for your reply. We both love snorkeling and a bit of culture, good food and not too busy - so your information will help

thanks for your reply, will definately look at krabi

    hi

Thankyou for replying - have lots of info to look at.

thankyou for your reply - looking at all information sent

    Dressmakers near Patong

    Hi All

I%26#39;m off to Phuket, staying in Patong next week and am looking for a good tip on a dressmaker who%26#39;d be able to whip me up something fabulous off a picture for a friends wedding. Any info on good tailors and an idea on costs would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks so much

    Carly

    Dressmakers near Patong

Hi Carly, there are heaps of tailors/dressmakers in Patong nearly every second shop....I%26#39;m not sure about prices but they would be relatively cheaper than in Australia to make something....perhaps another TA member could recommend one. My husband had a full length lined cashmere coat and another casual jacket made by the tailor at Thara Patong Resort. I can%26#39;t remember the exact price but it was cheaper than if he had it made here in Melbourne...There are so many beautiful dresses in Thailand, I%26#39;m sure you will find something..Linda

    Dressmakers near Patong

Thanks so much for your reply! Much appreciated. I do remember seeing many tailors there last time so hopefully I stumble across a good one.

    Have a lovely day!

    :)

Hey mate. There is one tailor I can recommend. A friend of mine had a suit made by him last time we stayed in Patong. He was very happy with the result. The place is located right in Patong Resort Hotel, 208 Rat-U-Thit Road. The name: ';W. Boss International Tailor';.

You are looking at about 3500 Baht for a suit plus shirts. Don%26#39;t forget to bargain, otherwise you will be ripped off!

    Tailoring

I suggest you try SILHOUETTE, situated in Soi Post Office, Patong, just up from the beachfront road (in the same Soi as the popular S%26amp;G and Sabai Sabai restaurants).

Silhouette is owned and run by a lovely Thai couple, Somsak Bumroongwong and his wife Vasita. Somsak and Vasita are both graduates of the School Of Fashion in Bangkok, They stock top quality fabrics which they personally go to Bangkok to buy and - most importantly - they will make what you want, unlike many of the others who will make what they think you should have.

    That is very important, and particularly so for ladieswear. As my wife - who was in the fashion trade for 50 year+ - and her close friends say ';Vasita makes the difference.';

Somsak and Vasita take their time, and suggest things. Go early in your stay, that way you can have fittings at leisure! Between May to September, the shop is usually only open from 6pm to 11pm.

Silhouette is a bit more expensive that most of the others but believe me it is worth it. Their men%26#39;s jackets are stunningly tailored and lined and I am still wearing trousers purchased 6 years ago!

NOTE: from an posting I made HERE just a couple of hours ago, that S%26amp;S are shifting their shop in October.

This is just one of the places covered in a tip sheet that a friend and I have put together over the 15 years or so we have been visiting Patong.

It is a sort of %26#39;quick start%26#39; for your holiday and was originally prepared for local friends and acquaintances in our home town of Dunedin, New Zealand, intending to holiday in Phuket.

It suggests places to go, places to eat and, of course, places to shop as well as information on things like drinking water, currency exchange and so on! Something to carry with you and totally non-commercial.

If you would like a copy, just email me: rfdunedin@ymail.com.

And yes, it is available to any TA member who asks. Just send me that email.

    Enjoy your holiday!

Hello i have been reading your replys to peoples questions and would be grateful if could send me you fact sheet on phuket ,as we are off there on the 30th of october and this is are 1st visit and i cant wait thank you for your help regards jill

  • Where to eat

My family and I will be in Bangkok by Sunday, any suggestions where we can eat, not too fancy restaurants. I have two girls 9 and 8, and I don%26#39;t want to bring them to places within malls.

    Where to eat

Depends where you are staying. Its a big city with great food on almost every street.

    Where to eat

Yes; please try to be a bit more specific.

If you%26#39;re going to stay in the Sukhumvit area, you could try Sukhumvit Soi 11 for...

Thai -- A place called Rotsabieng (say Rot like %26#39;learning by rote%26#39;), which means dining car, as in the dining car of a train. They%26#39;ve have great Thai food, a lovely garden with fairy lights at night and in the middle of the restaurant, an enchanting electric model train set in a mountainside with models of a village and ski slopes, etc. Staff and atmosphere are child-friendly. My kids love the trains.

Tex-Mex, Indian, tapas or pub fare -- When you go into Soi 11 with Sukhumvit behind you, about 50m into Soi 11 you will see a little sub-soi at your left. Go into that one, and you will see Moghul Room (Indian), Charley Brown%26#39;s (Tex-Mex), a tapas place whose name I forget, and pub I%26#39;ve also forgotten -- but I%26#39;ve heard good things about them. All of them have kid-friendly atmospheres.

Sukhumvit Soi 33 has Basilico, which is an expensive Italian restaurant that nevertheless has a relaxed, child-friendly atmosphere and AMAZING pizza. Worth the price for a spalsh-out. It%26#39;s made in a wood-fire oven, my kids love sitting at the table nearest the oven because they can watch the chefs preparing all of the pizzas and calzones and then they watch them circulating in the giant oven.

If you let us know more about where you%26#39;re lodging and what kind of food your daughters prefer, I%26#39;ll add more options later.

Minivan to Hua Hin - where exactly do we go to get the bus?

On Phayathai road, the mall is just right under the Victory Monument BTS skytrain station

another spot to jump in the mini van is in front of Rajvithi hospital

there%26#39;s no published schedule. it leaves when all seats are taken but it actually doesn%26#39;t take long to wait.

Don%26#39;t know the fare now. few years back was about 150 Baht. Now should be about 180-200 Baht

Soi Rangnam - directly beside the Century center, and right under the Victory Monument station.

Thanks Yalowa and DragonC! I went to google maps and both locations you mentioned are close to each other. I think we should be able to find it.

new years eve compulsary gala dinner..

i have stayed in bangkok a few times over this period (though often in lower end places ) i know that many hotels enforce this compulsary new years eve dinner ,of course you dont have to eat it but you have to pay for it and it can be very expensive (one warning on the malaysia forum was that a hotel was charging 215 us dollars).how common is this practice and does it also apply to higher end hotels in phuket and samui etc.?

new years eve compulsary gala dinner..

Yes. But have you considered why they do it? Employees of the hotel are working on two major public holidays, New Years Eve and New Years Day. Most staff are not well paid, so apart from working unsocial hours for not very much, they will also miss the fun of being with family and friends on NYE. The vast majority of the better hotel pay the staff extra for working those days.

new years eve compulsary gala dinner..

i%26#39;m sure you are right dragonc though, some of the prices i have seen even with the extra staff bonuses i%26#39;m sure the hotel trousers the vast majority of the cash ,but anyway that isnt really my question ,i was really wondering how commonplace this is and also giving a heads up to those who may be staying over this period to beware that their hotel of choice may be enforcing this compulsary gala dinner..

  • Ambassador Hotel

Has anyone been to the Ambassador hotel? How does it rate compared to the surrounding hotels? The location looks pretty good.

I see they have a tower on the hotel which is supposed to be where the better rooms are located. Do these rooms have WiFi services or in-room safes?

    Ambassador Hotel

Family travel is ok at Ambassador, but the staff leaves something to be desired. The wife is Asian, and several times when she walked in with me, one of the ';Gards'; would try to get her for a joiner fee. Really ticked me off, big time. If they did that in the states, they would be in deep poo poo. Rooms were in sad shape, but supposed to be in process of renovation, as was the Lobby. For single guys, it is not girl friendly, even for the massage therapist that are in the same area.

    Ambassador Hotel

The Ambassador is a very old hotel dating back from the 1960s. I stayed there whilst on R%26amp;R leave from Vietnam. At that time it was listed as a 5* property, so that will give you some idea of its vintage - and mine!!!

It is in dire need of immediate renovation. The only thing that attracts me to this place is the brilliant Indian restaurant, possibly the best in Bangkok. As far as hotel accommodation is concerned, you can do much better elsewhere.

Thx ... Looks like I may be cancelling this reservation.

anybody stayed at Peach Blossom Hotel?

Hi,has anyone yet stayed at this hotel,i believe it has recently opened.

    LAMAI BEACH :-)

Visitors to the island resort of Koh Samui in search of luxury accommodation during the months of November and December might find an offer by the latest up-market resort to open somewhat tempting.

Langham Place Samui is a five-star resort on Lamai Beach comprising 77 villas and suites, many featuring their own personal plunge pools, as well as individual beachside villas for those on a romantic getaway and who wish to view the sunrise from the comfort of their beds.

Guests who book and stay during the first two months the resort opens are being tempted with a buy one get one free offer, irrespective of what rooms they book at the hotels best available rates.

Set in a chic modern village theme, the resort also offers suites clustered around large communal pools, as well as two piers extending 150 metres out to a secluded sala or ocean pool.

According to the company, the resort promises a journey of stimulating hospitality touching all the senses, with guests walking through a walkway of waterfalls ending at a raised lobby providing breathtaking views of the sea.

Beachside service will include Beach Angels offering sun lotions, serving refreshments and cleaning sunglasses, while a borderless dining concept will be in place allowing guests to dine at specially designed retreats set throughout the resort grounds, as well as at the Ocean View restaurant and poolside Splash Bar.

The resort will also feature a Chuan Spa offering guests spa treatments based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as well as Thai Traditional Medicine-based treatments.

With room prices starting Bt7,000 (about $US206) and a requirement for those taking up the special offer to pay the breakfast charge of Bt750 (about $US22) on the bonus days, the offer, as is the resort, not designed for those on a budget, but rather for those in search of a touch of luxury.

    Hi musicsavemylife2,

Thanks for your inrofmation, I think I will go FEB next year.

we have been twice to koh samui in November and it was sunny alot of the time with a few heavy downpours but did not ruin our stay.

    Hi redbullover,

    Thank you for the information

you should get no rain in february

February: 2006 the sun came out on 15th of Feb. after a desasterous November 2005. 2007 February was like in the books. 2008 Feb. was surprisingly raining quite a lot, 2009 was fine again. November: 2005 as said, 2006 was nice, 2007 and 2008 quite normal - rain that stopped after a short while of one or two hours. 2009 ? We are waiting for some rain now in October! In the moment we have perfect conditions for tourists, sun and again sun. But the island is needing rainwater.

Has anyone taken a tour with this company? Am considering going to Thailand on their ';Amazing Thailand'; tour. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

    Smartours

I went on Smartours trip to Japan last summer and am booked for their South Africa trip on Christmas Day. I know someone who has traveled with them to Thailand, China, Scandinavia, and Japan. Our trip was wonderful and I have only heard good things about Smartours. The people in their office, however, need to brush up on their customer relations skills. They are not friendly.

did you end up going on the thailand trip with smartours? how was it? how was the hotel quality? how was the company to work with?

First time traveling with Smartours -Thailand with Phuket extension and it was Fabbbbbulous. The tours were great, the bus was only half full so you learnt everyones name and story (great fellow travelers) and the director (Mr. Boeing) was superb (many resouces and stopped for local tastings.) Also the itinerary was flexible and as a group we initiated some event that were not on the list (long neck hill tribe people, transvestite show- simon cabaret) and the director provided us with many stories and executed some of the local customs, and provided assistance above and beyond the call of duty in some cases to make sure we where kept happy. I would recommend this tour.

Thinking of booking Australia next year. If anyone has done that one I would be interested to hear you experiences.- specifically the size of the groups. If you would like more information about Thailand send me a note. Thanks

Thanks for the post. I%26#39;m thinking about this Thailand tour myself. Could I contact you directly if I have questions?

Hello, I%26#39;m considering the ';Amazing Thailand + Phuket'; Smartour this winter, and am wondering what mix of people usually go on these? I%26#39;m 28-years old and may go with a friend or two, or possibly on my own. Is it mostly older couples? Any info much appreciated!!!

Feel free to join us on the Phuket extension tour starting Nov 14. We%26#39;re low 30s and travel worldwide a lot!

I just got back from Thailand. It was awesome and as mentioned above, Mr. Boeing is a great tour guide. Two optional tours are worth taking: floating market out of Bangkok and tribal villages in Chiang Rai. Highly recommended in general!

Just returned from the ';Amazing Thailand Plus Phuket'; extension. This was my second Smartours trip, and I liked this one a little less than my previous trip six years ago to Beijing. I traveled with my sixteen year old daughter.

    Smartours remains a terrific bargain...simply no way you could put this together yourself and come close to doing as much, or staying in as many places. We had 40 in our overall group, but as always you see them as little or as much as you like once you arrive at a destination. Our group was very compatible....I made some friends, and it was great o have company in lonely airports, huge markets etc. There was a great mix of twenty somethings all the way up to seventies...my teenage daughter really appreciated that it wasn%26#39;t all ';old people.';

Highlights for me were Chiang Mai....much easier for me as a Coloradan to deal with then the madness and exhausting nature of Bangkok. The three day stay in Phuket was also very good.. great hotel, though Patong Beach is an overcrowded and overrated destination. There are a lot of side tours to various islands. For me, the three days we spent traveling to Lampang and the middle of Thailand were arbitrary and a boring waste of time. I and many in our group were ';Wated'; out by that time. I felt trapped by this portion of the tour.

I have traveled extensively on my own to Europe, Asia, Southern Africa, etc. and lived five years in Munich Germany as a teenager. All tours...including Smartours...are bound to be somewhat generic, and they seem to feel the need ot expose you to every Wat, temple, shopping opportunitiy, jewelry factory etc etc. They don%26#39;t ever buy into the notion that ';less is more.'; Our guide knew a great deal about Buddhism, hero worshipped the King of Thailand, and said next to nothing about the politics and economics of the country. That bothered me, particularly in the long hours I spent riding the bus for three days listening to her drone on about the next Buddha image, or the next semi miracle performed by the King. It was a true Thai ';Chamber of Commerce'; presentation. That said, she was very well organized, a good problem solver, and a friendly soul.

All of these travel companies need to wake up and realize that the typical person who does these tours is not necesarily some ignorant nincompoop. Traveling is expensive, and tours can make it affordable for many curious folks who would otherwise find it impossible. Not all of us are interested in seeing twenty Buddhist Wats, when six or seven would teach us just as much, and allow us to stay interested in the subject.

I don%26#39;t want to be fed a bunch of hooey about how great their King is when it is obvious he lives luxuriously on the backs of millions of Thais who barely make a living. We were actually told by this guide that the King had created rain where there was drought, and a host of other infantile things. Come on, Smartours....Americans are tolerant of other peoples%26#39; beliefs, but we revolted against a King a couple hundred years ago. If your guides want to feed us the standard Thai party line, at least she should know something about our history when she conveys these fairy tales!

Having said that, it seems to be genuinely true that Thais like their king....there is all sorts of propaganda everywhere about him and his family, and the major tourist site in Thailand, the Grand Palace, shut down for several days when the King%26#39;s sister died around the New Year. Thais seem willing to support the royal fmaily%26#39;s preposterously luxurious lifestyle. So be it.....we Americans certainly throw away enough money on things far more dubious. I just never felt this was something any of us could talk about in Thailand.

Thailand is a beautiful country....but we spent narry a minute visiting a waterfall, a national park, or any kind of park or preserve on our trip. I and other wanted more time to relax, more time to get away from the canned tours, jewlery factories, jade factories, textile factories etc etc. Yes, we are Americans with disposable incomes, but we are not ALL a bunch of pre programmed, mornonic shopaholics. I%26#39;d ask Smartours to upgrade this tour...expect a little bit more from your clients, and a little bit less at the same time.

We took the Smatours Amazing Thailand tour in November. It was wonderful. We have traveled to several places around the world but this was our first time in Asia. We really enjoyed the Smartours format. We loved our time in Bangkok before the bus part of the tour began. We hired private guides for two full days there and had an excellent time. We did a tour of Bangkok and the Grand Palace one day with our private guide and another day the private guide took us to the floating market and tiger temple, both of which should not be missed!

After that, the bus tour was fabulous. Our Smartours guide was knowledgeable, pleasant and patient. We enjoyed all the ruins and the wats since each one is slightly different. We loved the monkey wat and enjoyed the pleasant stops for Thai iced coffee. We especially loved the stop at the mulberry paper making place where we made our own handmade paper with flower petals imbedded in them (these were later delivered to us in Chiang Mai and we also found the stop at the Buddah image factory very interesting.

We liked Chiang Rai and shopping near the border of Myanmar (where we found great bargains and lovely handicrafts) but found the hotel there to be disappointing. Chiang Mai was fabulous and the elephant camp was wonderful. It was an amazing experience to go for a ride on such a huge animal and then we made friends with a young elephant who used his trunk to take our hats on and off our heads. We also hired private guides for one day in Chiang Mai. We had a lovely day with that guide too. He took us to a celedon factory, wood carving village, the wat up on the mountain and to a secret hideaway for lunch in a restaurant overlooking a waterfall. He also drove us around the city and showed us several colleges that are there plus stopped at an orphange to deliver produce.

Hotels in Bangkok and Chiang Mai were wonderful and top notch, the hotels in the other small towns were ok and the only one that I did not like was the hotel in Chiang Rai. It was not terrible but it was dated and tired.

The people on the tour were nice and there was quite a mix of ages. Everything from twenty somethings to 70%26#39;s. The value that Smartours provided was unbeatable. The airfare alone would have cost almost as much as the entire trip cost through Smartours. We did as few of the extra tours as possible, instead doing research in advance and hiring our own guides. We felt like this made a difference since we did not get overwhelmed by the group togetherness and then we also had a few days to go at our own pace.

Make sure you indulge in a few good massages while you are there. You can%26#39;t beat the price or the experience. I did not care for Thai massage much but I am glad I tried it once. They are also very good at swedish style massage and I prefered that.

All in all, it was one of our best trips ever and we felt like the value was fantastic!

    Dear Walker26,

I am planning a trip to Japan using Smartours and would appreciate your help. I need to know the name of the company that conducted the tour in Japan, or your tour guide and his email. I want to stay a few extra nights in Kyoto, at the Rihga Royal Hotel and I need some help with this. Thanks, Michael A. Miller, michaelamiller@optonline.net

Day trip from Bangkok to monks tiger sanctutury

    Hi,

Is it possible to do a day trip from Bangkok to the monks tiger sanctuary? also is there any time, day or month I should not go. How long is the journey there and how much time is need in the sanctuary to get the best out of it?

    Thanks Hannah

Day trip from Bangkok to monks tiger sanctutury

it isnt a tiger sanctuary .google .. tiger temple thailand or just go back several pages here .39 separate worldwide tiger charities have advised against going there,Care For the wild recently posted an article in national geographic magazine suggesting that it was in cahouts with a tiger farm in laos and supplying tiger body parts to china..though of course you wont see any of that should you decide to visit ,you will see what they want you to see..

Day trip from Bangkok to monks tiger sanctutury

Enter ';tiger temple'; in the TA search box to read all you want, and may not want, to know about this place.

Yes you can do it on day trip. Its in Kanchanaburi province and would take about three hours or more from Bangkok. Lots of agents can arrange tours.

    Car Hire Koh Chang

Staying at Nirvana Bang Bo in Nov.

We want to hire a jeep for 7 days.

    Any info/tips please

    Thanks

    Car Hire Koh Chang

Get the hotel to arrange it. They%26#39;ll be able to call someone up and hae a delivered for you. Or contact a tour agent in Bangbao and they%26#39;ll sort you out with a small car / pick up or awful Suzuki Carriban %26#39;jeep%26#39; for around 1200 Baht/day. Maybe nearer 1000 if you rent for a week.

    Car Hire Koh Chang

On Chai Chet Koh Chang Plaza you%26#39;ll find Cowboy car rental. A jeep is around 800 THB.

advice, do not use Cowboy. They demands big money with bad message if you have small damage accident.. 9000 baht in our case for stupide small damage on motocycle! We come back again to Koh Chang and see they are still in busness. a big shame. please beware!!

  • New to Thailand

Sorry if all these questions have been asked before but we are at the beginning of planning a trip to Thailand and thinking of going in April 2010. We would like to visit two or possibly three places is this a good idea and if so would you think Bangkok should be one of them with maybe Krabi and somewhere else or perhaps just two places is enough? Is April a good time to go and would you do this independently or through a tour operator? We went to Malaysia with Thomas Cook Signature which worked out quite well. Any suggestions would be welcome.

    New to Thailand

G%26#39;day twigs, yes Bangkok deserves a few days of your time, it%26#39;s a great city.

April will be hot, and Songkran Festval (Thai New Year) is generally happening between 13-15 April. Where ever you find yourself around that period expect to get very wet - i.e. have water splashed on you.

Take a few moments to review the Top Questions about Thailand FAQ%26#39;s, there%26#39;s good info in there.

Everything your travel agent can do for you, you can do yourself online, it%26#39;s really a matter for you as to what%26#39;s best.

    New to Thailand

Bangkok, Chiangmai and Krabi would be a good taster for a first visit. The north is quite different to Bangkok and Krabi, and I think you would enjoy the contrast.

Thank you both so much for your help. I am going to enjoy planning this trip and you have given me a good start.

How long will you have in Thailand? I agree that Chiang Mai and Krabi are excellent choices for stops! We love it at both destinations! Another place to consider for something a bit different is Khao Sok National Park. You could spend one night in a treehouse in the middle of the jungle, and another night on floating bamboo rafthouses on Chiaw Laan Lake. The lake at dawn is breathtaking.. a perfect mirror of the surrounding limestone mountains and jungles, with the sound of the gibbons in the background.

If you %26#39;d like to see some of my pics, we have Chiang Mai, Krabi, Khao Sok, Bangkok and Phi Phi pictures here:

    …photobucket.com/albums/…

Oh yeah, and I would do most things independently. We did do a tour with Khoa sok National Park with limestonelake Tours ( www.limestonelaketours.com ) but did everything else independently. Half the fun is the planning! :D

Thank you I love your pictures. We will probably go for two weeks. Any suggestions are very welcome.
