new years eve compulsary gala dinner..

i have stayed in bangkok a few times over this period (though often in lower end places ) i know that many hotels enforce this compulsary new years eve dinner ,of course you dont have to eat it but you have to pay for it and it can be very expensive (one warning on the malaysia forum was that a hotel was charging 215 us dollars).how common is this practice and does it also apply to higher end hotels in phuket and samui etc.?

Yes. But have you considered why they do it? Employees of the hotel are working on two major public holidays, New Years Eve and New Years Day. Most staff are not well paid, so apart from working unsocial hours for not very much, they will also miss the fun of being with family and friends on NYE. The vast majority of the better hotel pay the staff extra for working those days.

i%26#39;m sure you are right dragonc though, some of the prices i have seen even with the extra staff bonuses i%26#39;m sure the hotel trousers the vast majority of the cash ,but anyway that isnt really my question ,i was really wondering how commonplace this is and also giving a heads up to those who may be staying over this period to beware that their hotel of choice may be enforcing this compulsary gala dinner..
