Will 2 nights spent in Udon Thani be sufficient?

I will arrive there 22 Nov 09 and not sure whether to stay for one or two nights as my main purpose is going to Vientiane, Laos. I need some advice with regard to this. Are there many things to do as a first time tourist? I%26#39;m interested in photography and history.

Thank you.

Thank you, mate. Will go to the web now.

Vientiane, as a capital of Laos, is a smaller city but there%26#39;re some nice attractions(mostly temples) that worth a visit. I also think Vientiane is a nicer town

But i think 1 night in Udon will not give you enough time to explore what the city has to offer. So i would say better for 2 nights

If you like taking lots of pictures, Phu Phra Bat Historical Park is a place to be considered. Who knows? this place would be another World Heritage Site as it%26#39;s added in the Tentative List of UNESCO (since year 2004 )

Ban Chiang, already awarded as the World Heritage Site, is very rustic. But there%26#39;re not many to do/see there. Just a few excavation pits and its archaeological museum. You can see some collections of Ban Chiang artifacts at Jim Thompson%26#39;s house and there%26#39;re lots at Suan Pakkad museum in Bangkok

Hi drmytan or Mark,

Udon Thani is a great value for money town with friendly people. I usally visit from Laos regularly for shopping and many Lao go over on weekends to shop at Charoensi Mall or shopping center to load up on amenities and bring back across Friendship Bridge.

I find the Udon locals very friendly and willing to help with information.

BTW, if you%26#39;re headed to Vientiane, there%26#39;s an %26#39;international bus%26#39; that goes from the main bus station a couple blocks from Charoensi that goes all the way into Vientiane%26#39;s central Morning Market Bus Station and offers 5-6 times per day. Used to be that you needed the Lao visa in advance to board that bus and that may still be the case but it might be worthwhile double checking since this bus is inexpensive and convenient though you could do the border crossing faster on your own with more expensive transport.

For a good meal there%26#39;s the night market closer to the train station which is stil within easy walking distance of Charoensi OR the main bus station. Also shopping there too.

BTW, fyi, Lao Airlines does offer direct flights between Udon Thani and Luang Prabang-Laos on Friday%26#39;s and Sunday%26#39;s and it%26#39;s only a few more dollars than their Vientiane to Luang Prabang flight. This info is just in case you%26#39;re headed up to LP and it%26#39;ll save you the effort of having to go through Vientiane twice.

Thank you Yalowa.

I will definitely stay for 2 nights and will definitely go to visit Pu Pra Bat Historical Park.

I really happy to receive this piece of information that helps plan my itinerary.

This forum is %26#39;too fantastic%26#39; %26amp; %26#39;very friendly%26#39;%26#39;
